About this listen

Catherine Morland reads tales of Gothic romance, yet leads a country life in Wiltshire. When she travels to Bath, she meets and falls in love with Henry Tilney. She is invited by his sister and father to stay at Northanger Abbey, where she meets all the trappings of Gothic horror that she has read about. Fortunately, she has her own good sense and irresistible but unsentimental hero, Henry Tilney.©1989, 2008 BBC Audiobooks Ltd (P)2014 Audible, Inc. Classics Classic Historical Romance

The storyline drags a bit but I got through it. At least with a historical fiction, there is always the interest in hearing described the places at the time, in this case, Bath of England. I have to say it though, Jane Austin has nothing on the Brontë’ sisters.

A bit boring

For years I have considered Northanger Abbey to be a ‘lesser’ Jane Austen text, purely due to its lack of adaptations. I could not have been more wrong! I absolutely loved Catherine, despite the hilarious narration constantly reminding us she wasn’t born to be a heroine. Henry is a surprisingly different Austen leading man, with his obvious interest in Catherine from the start unlike the Darcys, Knightleys, Farrars, Wentworths and Edmunds of the world!
My only issue with the narration was the inconsistent volume which blasted my ears at a few points with General Tilney, but it was beautifully read with great characterisation.
I’ll be listening again.

A surprising delight!

loved it, never wanted to stop. I wish the story kept going, but it also ends very well.

Jane Austen’s works are always full of characters that make me smile. She must have been so piercingly observant of human nature in her small circle of acquaintance. I so wish she had lived to write more novels.

Amazing!

It was a nice coming-of-age love story. I am particularly fond of the heroine and the maturation she underwent. The writing itself was flowery and poetic which made it easy to read despite being first published centuries ago. I feel like it lacked conflict but was still great. I recommend this book.

This is such a fun, light-hearted Jane Austen story, and I often turn to it when life is a bit hard or stressful. I was a bit disappointed with this audio version because I felt the narrator’s renditions of the male characters were not fantastic. Having said that, it would take a lot more than that to ruin this book for me.

Pure delight!

I thoroughly enjoyed this Audible edition of Northanger Abbey. Jane Austen’s wit and playful satire made this such a delightful listen. I especially loved the vivid descriptions of Bath and the lively goings-on of society—the balls, conversations, and intrigues felt so real and entertaining. Catherine Morland’s journey from innocence to insight is charming, and Austen’s gentle humor kept me smiling throughout.

The narration was excellent—clear, expressive, and perfectly suited to the novel’s tone. It really brought the characters and setting to life, making me feel as though I was right there in Bath alongside them.

A wonderful mix of humor, romance, and social observation—highly recommended for anyone who loves Austen or wants a lighthearted introduction to her work.

what a lovely voice this narrator has. I hated Thorpe all the more for his vile voice and character haha but I wish she had done Tilney's voice different, it made him sound rather pompus

lovely narrator
