About this listen

'The literary phenomenon of the decade.' Guardian
'The book that defined a generation.' Stylist

**The modern classic behind the BAFTA-winning series. **

Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in the west of Ireland, but the similarities end there. In school, Connell is popular and well-liked, while Marianne is a loner. But when the two strike up a conversation - awkward but electrifying - something life-changing begins.

Normal People is a story of mutual fascination, friendship and love. It takes us from that first conversation to the years beyond, in the company of two people who try to stay apart but find they can't.

'Tender and devastating.' Guardian
'A book to cancel plans for.' Grazia
'A classic coming-of-age love story.' Vogue

Honestly, it's very well written. The book takes you on a captivating journey and truly holds your attention. However, it left me disappointed and heavy-hearted (spoiler alert) that the story ended so abruptly with no happy ending and no promise of a sequel. It felt like there was no hope, and the author couldn't find a way to give it to you. I'd love to see a sequel where the two characters engage in meaningful therapy that's both agonizing torture and revolutionary. I wanted to read more of the author's books (if there are any), but I can't trust them not to leave me feeling frustrated and annoyed. I'll keep an eye out for a sequel (not just a TV series). I hope the author will make time to give us real hope.

Needs a sequel

Well written, well narrated, great story. Passionate, loving, sad, painful and a little bitter sweet. Hopefully, we will get a sequel at some point.

Great Story - All the feels

Overall thought it was good but I do think the TV show is better than the book. Especially the ending, ending of the book felt very rushed.

Enjoyed the narrators voice, fitted perfectly

As enjoyable as the tv series

I should of know that the book would be an odd ending as the whole story was a bit odd but I liked it. The ending was too open, I didn’t enjoy it.

Frustrating ending

This novel was so unusual and moving. I loved the narrator and her different voices and accents for different characters. I really felt like I was in Ireland during this listen.

Really touching, and well narrated

I found the characters frustrating as they just wouldn’t accept each other on many occasions and the ending unsatisfying.

The messiness of love

A truely heartwarming beautiful and sad story all in one. The series is the perfect adaptation of the book. It was read so eloquently by Aoife McMahon.
