About this listen

The View from the Cheap Seats draws together, for the first time ever, myriad nonfiction writing by international phenomenon and Sunday Times best-selling author Neil Gaiman. From Make Good Art, the speech he gave at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia that went viral, to pieces on artists and legends including Terry Pratchett, Lou Reed and Ray Bradbury, the collection offers a glimpse into the head and heart of one of the most acclaimed writers of our time.

This collection brings together more than 60 pieces of Neil Gaiman's outstanding nonfiction. Analytical yet playful, erudite yet accessible, this cornucopia explores a broad range of interests and topics, including (but not limited to): authors past and present; music; storytelling; comics; bookshops; travel; fairy tales; America; inspiration; libraries; ghosts; and the title piece, at turns touching and self-deprecating, which recounts the author's experiences at the 2010 Academy Awards in Hollywood.

I finished the audio and said "fantastic", which it is. Neil is truthful and truly walking down the street naked. To hear him share his thoughts and experiences in his own voice adds greater depth to his already wonderful writing.

What made the experience of listening to The View from the Cheap Seats the most enjoyable?

What a great companion piece to any of Neil Gaiman's novels. A wonderful insight into Neil's stories and ideas through essays and reflections. Most are stand alone bite size chunks that you can absorb in one sitting. Such a pleasure to hear Neil reading his own essay's, just the way he intended.

Neil Gaiman delivers his prose with his custom wit and whimsy. This book has thoughts on everything from the importance of libraries to the Syrian humanitarian crisis, sprinkled with portraits of people like Douglas Adams and Sir Terry Pratchett and Harlan Ellis. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of or interested in Gaiman, storytelling, literacy, culture, and thoughtful contemplation.

Absolutely fantastic.

I truly wish I could rate this book 50 stars. I loved listening to Neil Gaiman actually read his own work, not books, not stories but actual real life speeches, introductions to other authors books, teachings & most importantly his own thoughts on his real life, friends & family. I found it uplifting & literally laughed out loud plus shed a tear or 10. Thank you for sharing this Neil, I’ll be grateful for a long time
