Publisher's Summary

Born in Darwin in 1929, Jacqueline's childhood was spent in a succession of bush towns before she was sent to school in Darwin. Returning to her beloved territory, Jacqueline met and married stockman Ken Hammar, and they moved to a vast property in one of the most inaccessible areas of Australia.

With only a kerosene stove, scant possessions and a bed, Jacqueline’s determination and courage helped her survive many hardships as they created a prosperous 1,000,000 acre cattle station.

Great story

Great story
Melodious voice
Shame about significant inaccurate pronunciation eg Albany, Mindil, Tanami etc which detracts from the performance and undermines the story credibility :(

The real deal

Having grown up in rural Australia and having travelled a little in the vast outback including Northern Territory, for me there has long been an 'otherness' about the Territory and an uncertainty in regard to the tall tales that it inspires.
Part of the beauty of this book is its REAL-NESS. In addition to being a great story teller (it reads like the product of a very fertile imagination), Jacqueline Hammar is probably unique in having LIVED it all.
Much enjoyed, and highly recommended.

Love The Territory

As an adopted daughter of The Territory for now over 40 years, I enjoyed these remembrances. Although I am a relative "new comer" there were many familiar names and memories, of places and people within these chapters which brought numerous smiles to my face. My only disappointment was unfamiliar pronunciation of quite a few place names however I guess Brigid has not personally experienced these places so this is understandable. All in all... excellent...

Australia's unheard heroines.

The most enthralling and incredible telling of our pioneering women of the outback. I loved the descriptions of daily life, the early lives of the aboriginal people and how everyone worked together. Positivity laced with humour take on the most amazing feats.
One of the best books I have enjoyed.
