Publisher's Summary

Tom Bettany is working at a meat processing plant in France when he gets a voicemail telling him that his estranged 26-year-old son is dead.

Liam Bettany fell from his London balcony, where he was smoking dope. Now for the first time since he cut all ties years ago, Bettany returns home to find out the truth about his son's death.

But more than a few people are interested to hear Bettany is back in town. He might have thought he'd left it all behind when he first skipped town, but nobody really just walks away.

Great listen

I enjoyed this book

The storyline was interesting but the back play in the characters that go on to the Slow Horses series is a reward .

Not certain if this should be read before or after the other series

Sean Barrett's narration is great as always.

beautifully performed, good adjunct story

not quite up to the Slow Horses standard but a good story featuring some peripheral characters from the series.

Awesome, as usual.

great complex story with interesting characters. Sean Barrett is a fabulous narrator, with good vocal changes for the various characters.

Intriguing story

Well constructed story despite a weak start. Good narrator sustained suspense. Just the fight length,

Great to hear the Beginnings

Very pleasing story telling indeed. Terrific to get some more "back story" for those of us who only came in at the Slow Horses stage.
Such planning by the author to hear the inimitable Jackson's name uttered before....
And Sean Barrett. How brilliant can a voice actor be? This makes about the 30th? book I have listened to read by this person. I have chosen some because I was hunting for a particular title, but often, I was following the voice, skill, presence.
I hope the journey continues for a long time yet.

Great thriller and Sean Barrett is terrific as always

Really enjoyed this and the Dame Ingrid character, although not as good as Slow Horses. Like the way he can sketch out a character with just a few lines and you can almost see them before you eyes. And I enjoy the tradecraft. Sean Barrett is brilliant as always. He gets the tone pitch perfect.

A Fabulous Noir Thriller - One For The Connisseur

Mick Herron is a new author to me and if "Nobody Walks" is an indication of the quality of his other novels then I am in for a rare treat! Herron writes edgily and often lyrically bringing his characters to vivid life in a way that draws one in irresistibly. Set in contemporary London and narrated compellingly by another new name, Sean Barrett, this is a gritty, absorbing and, on occasion, very violent story. It tells of one man's quest to determine the truth concerning his son's death - ostensibly from falling from a balcony when he was smoking dope.

Tom Bettany, our chief protagonist, is an ex-MI5 joe facing the dangerous task of discovering who supplied Liam, his son, with the drug he smoked - Muskrat. Bettany quicky becomes aware he has been set up by his old employer to eliminate one of two people and is also being hunted by vengeful gangsters, relics from his old undercover life.

I listened to this novel for 7 hours through to the end the very first time a work of fiction has hooked me so totally. I can’t think of a stronger recommendation.

Precursor to Slow Horses

Can’t praise this highly enough. Having read all the Slow Horses this was, I believe, the precursor. Sean Barrett narrates superbly as ever. Characterisation excellent and the main character utterly believable.

Nice surprise

Having finished all the Slough House books, it was great to learn that this covers some of the backstory of some of the characters involved in them. As usual, Sean Barrett brings all the voices and characters to life with his wonderful reading and the combination of this and the author’s unique writing style makes for a good experience.

A good fix for spook street addicts

Having read all of the Slough House novels this was a good companion. Characterisation and plot work really well but I do confess that I missed Jackson Lamb!

Wonderful ‘prequel’! An absorbing listen - gloriously written, enjoyably plotted and, as ever, superbly read by Sean Barrett!

Enjoyed the story but not the ending

Narrator was the cos who does all the herron books so ideal. I like the story apart from the final page.
