About this listen

Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Pulitzer Prize–winning classic about the relationship between Franklin D. Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt, and how it shaped the nation while steering it through the Great Depression and the outset of World War II.

With an extraordinary collection of details, Goodwin masterfully weaves together a striking number of story lines—Eleanor and Franklin’s marriage and remarkable partnership, Eleanor’s life as First Lady, and FDR’s White House and its impact on America as well as on a world at war. Goodwin effectively melds these details and stories into an unforgettable and intimate portrait of Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt and of the time during which a new, modern America was born.©1995 Doris Kearns Goodwin, All Rights Reserved; (P)1995 Simon & Schuster Inc., All Rights Reserved; Audioworks is an Imprint of Simon & Schuster Audio Division, Simon & Schuster Inc.

this is my 3rd doris kearns book and I've loved all 3. never dry, always giving context to the times and painting a background as well as illuminating the characters. unlike mccullogh's john adams which felt like timelines and names, goodwin brings the people to life and shows you the good and bad making 3 dimensional characters.

went into it without much knowledge of fdr as an aussie - beyond the key events. came away with more respect for his presidency and less respect of his character. eleanor I loved.
