Publisher's Summary

It is New Year's Eve, nearly six weeks into an off-and-on blizzard that has locked Alaska down, effectively cutting it off from the outside world. But now there are reports of a plane down in the Quilak mountains. With the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board - responsible for investigating aviation incidents) unable to reach the crash site, ex-trooper Jim Chopin is pulled out of retirement to try to identify the aircraft, collect the corpses, and determine why no flight has been reported missing. But Jim discovers survivors: two children who don't speak a word of English. Meanwhile, PI Kate Shugak receives an unexpected and unwelcome accusation from beyond the grave - a charge that could change the face of the Park forever.

Disappointing

Sadly too political took all the joy out. Hard to listen to attacks when trying to escape the nightly news and just relax. My last book from Stabenow. Too bad it has to be on such a sour note.

Good Story, poor production

The audio was the worst of any book I've had from Audible (and there have been a lot!). I was very disappointed in the production quality of this book. The splicing was so obvious and VERY distracting! I love Dana's books, but come on!!

My least favorite Kate Shugak book

I’ve read or listened to all the Kate Shugak books and I’m always excited to see another one has come out. I love all of the characters and the wonderfully detailed descriptions of bush Alaska life. Stabenow has spent years building the characters and the town so well I feel like I’ve been there and met all these people and Marguerite Gavin has done a good job narrating everything from the booming voice of Bobby Clark to the tough but broken Kate. They’ve been a good team. This time around they’re both off their game. The chapters from the point of view of the young boy are both unnecessary and really irritating in both the writing and narration. The characters all seem to have lost their unique personalities and the plot seems overly contrived. Sorry I wasted the money and time.

The series needs to end

I have been a faithful reader of the series! It hurts to say this but... it's time to end the series. I had the same feeling after the previous book and really did not want to read this one, but I guess I was missing Kate's "universe". Unlike other reviewers I was not that upset about political issues in the book. Take them for what they are... things to think about... I was sad about the overall feeling of the book. I did not recognize the style of the author that I loved. The feeling was she was tired of the main character, of that "universe", really did not want to do it, but had to, so she hurried through the book just to be done with it. Using political issues comes from that (had to write about something new...). With sadness... good-bye, Kate.

Audible should be ashamed of the Production

I am a huge fan of Dana Stabenow and Marguerite Gavin - have listened to almost all of her novels. That said, the Production (or post production) on this one is absolutely embarrassingly AWFUL! Audible should be ashamed of themselves for putting this in the library to be sold - it would be irritating if it were free. The performers voice gets louder and softer, lines of the book are repeated - it is so distracting that it makes it hard to concentrate on the story. I feel for the author as this is really not a good representation of her work! Shame on you Audible - I will be requesting a refund.

No Fixed Line

If you are a fan of the series then you'll want to listen to this book. There was a crime, several in fact, and Kate solves them and survives the bad people trying to get her. The Alaska setting and people are good. It did seem there could be more plot and character development in the book.

Weird narration

The narrators voice gets suddenly louder, higher,or lower. Sounds like she recorded sections and they were spliced together with no continuity or editing.

Excellent! Except for the audio editing

Excellent as always, except the audio editing was poor. It was distracting but only periodically.

Love her books

Another great book from Dana Stabenow! I love following the characters as they move from book to book.
