Bogen indeholder blandt andet fortællingerne "Hvorledes Nisserne blev til", "Nissen og Eske Brok" og "Nissen på Thimsgaard".
Vilhelm Bergsøe (1835 - 1911) var en dansk forfatter og zoolog. Han udgav en del novellesamlinger, romaner og selvbiografiske værker, men bedst kendt er han for romanen Fra Piazza del popolo, som udkom i 1866. Af andre betydelige værker kan nævnes Bruden fra Rørvig, Falskmøntneren, Flyvefisken "Prometheus" og Fra den gamle fabrik.
