Publisher's Summary

A young woman lies dead, strangled by a killer still prowling the sweltering, run-down neighborhood. The young wife of a police lieutenant receives threatening phone calls; the precinct's patrol cars are sabotaged; even the puppies the officers have adopted as mascots are savagely slain.

It looks like there's a psycho on the loose with a vendetta against the cops. And then the widow of a precinct cop is found horribly murdered. The signature of the first crime is on this one. But a deadly new element has been added - another murderer is imitating the first one's methods.

A painful listen

The story was great...... The narrator, not so much. Mispronounced MANY simple words and over enunciated most others. The story kept me listening but I ended up buying the book to read the ending.

This may be a great book but.....

This may be a great story but unfortunately the narrator did such a poor job, I will never know. I got as far as chapter 5 but the frequent stammering, word mispronouncing and line repeating became too painful to listen. Someone please introduce this narrator to a good producer. This is one of the few times I requested my credit be refunded

A Bit Too Much Going On For One Book I Got Lost

Night Watch struck me as a typical police detective book. There was a lot going on and at times I had trouble following. I think I would have preferred a more streamlined plot with less of the subplots and details that, to me, didn't really add to the story.

I'm not sure what era or time the setting was. It definitely felt dated – not that that is a bad thing – and certainly not in the 21st-century.

Performance: This is the second book I've listen to that Adam Zens has performed. My personal preference is for fast-moving narration, so I usually listen to my books at 2X speed. I did this that with this one and enjoyed the performance. I'm not sure why the negative reviews. I thought Zens did a good job!

Notes: Violence
Rating: R if it were in a movie theater,

I enjoy leaving reviews, as I know that I read the reviews of others before I purchase a book. If you found my review helpful in your decision about this book, would you please select "yes" directly below this review? Thank you so much.

Please consider "following me" here on Audible.com. I purchase a lot of books by authors that I am faithful to and well known names. I also have the unique opportunity to review books from lesser known/new authors in all genres. Most of these books are not something that I would not pick up on my own. I have been pleasantly surprised by new authors and great narrators.

Night Watch Rocks!

Would you listen to Night Watch again? Why?

Yes, it was a complex story with memorable characters and a great performance by the narrator.

What other book might you compare Night Watch to and why?

Night Watch is like a cross between Faye Kellerman's "Street Dreams" and the movie "Police Academy." It has all the action and thrill of chasing a serial killer, but it is funny. Packer Lindt is leading a group of screw-up cops and must find a serial sex killer who is targeting his neighborhood. All this while trying to navigate his role as a new husband and father.

Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene is either when Packer goes through and edits the police reports because they are unreadable, or when Officer Yount hands Packer a toilet paper roll because a citizens gave it to them. The officer asks what to do with it, and Packer tells him to file it.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Underdogs battling evil.

Any additional comments?

There is no graphic sex, but this story is about catching a serial rapist/murderer so there are adult scenes and adult material. Excellent audio book, especially if you like gritty action thrillers.

lacking

I received a free copy of the audio version of this book to write a review. I tried but could not listen to the entire book. The narration is bad. It doesn't appear to have been edited for errors. The narrator's mispronunciations and re-reads are still there. The audio is tinny sounding. I could have gotten by all of that but the story line is hard to follow. It's all over the place. I'm guessing that it is suppose to be set in the 60s or 70s based on the racial slurs that are used.

Not Good.

Home Recorded Narrator

I barely made it through this book due to this Narrator. The story was mediocre; I can't imagine the majority of it was "true crime". The book ending ruined what was already a poor experience for me. I've listened to this author before and enjoyed it.

Not sure why I kept listening

To start with the narrator needs a new job. sometimes he sounded like he was on a speakerphone in his car. His nasally whiny voice almost made me turn it off before the first chapter ended. About 3/4 of the way in I knew who the bad guy was before they said it. There was waaay too much sex talk that had absolutely nothing to do with the story line. so many things left open at the end. I felt I had endured this story just to walk away disappointed.
