About this listen

For a long time, Mississippi's black Democrats had faithfully voted for white Democratic candidates. In 1996, at age 37, Kevin Antoine emerged from nowhere onto the Mississippi political scene. He gave white Democrats an opportunity to vote for an African American candidate who was the party's nominee. Uniquely, he was the first African American to be nominated by either party in Mississippi's majority-white 4th Congressional District. A political newcomer, Kevin Antoine defeated a long-time white city councilwoman from Jackson, the state capital. The Mississippi Democratic Party and the National Democratic Party openly supported the city councilwoman in the Democratic primary and the primary runoff.
