Publisher's Summary

In utter disbelief, Miss Marple read the letter addressed to her from the recently deceased Mr Rafiel, an acquaintance she had met briefly on her travels.

Recognising in Miss Marple a natural flair for justice, Mr Rafiel had left instructions for her to investigate a crime after his death. The only problem was, he had failed to tell her who was involved or where and when the crime had been committed. It was most intriguing.

Critic Reviews

"Joan Hickson is indisputably the best actress to have portrayed Miss Jane Marple on stage or on television." ( AudioFile)

Human nature laid bare

This is my favourite of all of Agatha Christie's books. Poignant, nuanced and almost cruelly honest in the way it explores the most dangerous word in the English language: Love. The past haunts the present and nothing is exactly what it seems.

Also, a sequel , although it can be read without the first book: The Caribbean Mystery.

One of the best Miss Marple books - but I just can’t enjoy the narrator

I adore this book, it is a Miss Marple book that is actually full of Miss Marple, rather than having her as a peripheral character. It is written entirely from Miss Marple’s perspective.

Big downside for me is the narrator. I avoid Joan Hickson when I can, but not all of the Miss Marple novels are available with other narrators.

I know Miss Marple is elderly, so having an older narrator may seem like a good match, but for me it just doesn’t work. Joan Hickson doesn’t do the voices of the other characters well, so everyone sounds like an old English woman (or, if the novel features anyone who isn’t English, that character, whether a man from the Caribbean or a young European maid, has the same odd ‘foreign’ accent). I also find that she doesn’t speak very clearly at times, so I have to keep jumping back to listen again.

I first heard of this book as a Marple episode. The book was a lot better.

My Favourite!

Really, what could be better than this fantastic story read by the great Joan Hickson. For me, no one comes close to Joan Hickson as Miss Marple in the TV series and equally here her reading of Agatha Christie. This has to be my favourite Agatha Christie of all time, so this, combined with great narration is perfect. Enjoy!

Nemesis

What made the experience of listening to Nemesis the most enjoyable?

The narration by Joan Hickson - she's the definitive Miss Marple.

What other book might you compare Nemesis to, and why?

No comparison.

Have you listened to any of Joan Hickson’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Yes, quite a few.

Any additional comments?

This is different to other Miss Marple books, in that she doesn't know what crime she has to investigate, but I like the way Rafiel has organised things beforehand, where various facts will gradually, in various steps, be revealed. One member has commented on the quality of this book. This is not the best recorded book on CD, so it is not Audible's fault. We need to remember that a great number of books on this site have been submitted by other sites, such as Harper Collins, Naxos, BBC, etc.

Joan Hickson is Miss Marple

I've always loved Miss Marple and to find audiobooks read by Joan Hickson was a delight. However in this recording her speech is slightly slurred, I expect due to her age at the time. Once past this however it is a must for Marple fans.

Wonderful

Well read, well written.

Not a lot more can be said. A humerus and gripping story.

I do recommend this book.

Classic Agatha by the definitive Miss Marple

It doesn't get much better than this. Classic Agatha Christie read by the late great Joan Hickson who got it so right when she played Miss Marple on t.v. I was going to bed early every night just to listen !

My favourite Miss Marple

Although the narration at times is a little unclear, you really can't beat Joan Hickson as Miss Marple. This is an unusual book as part of the mystery is finding out which crime had been committed, as well as the perpetrator. The characters are interesting and there are enough red herrings to keep you guessing right to the end

Nemesis

The story is wonderful but sorry to say that Joan Hickson isn't good as narrator. I love her as an actor in her Miss Marple caracter but she is mumbling in her reading of Nemesis. I had problem to hear what she said. It took an effort to listen but I will recommend it anyway!
