Publisher's Summary

Nature puts a “survival switch” in our bodies to protect us from starvation. Stuck in the “on” position, it’s the hidden source of weight gain, heart disease, and many other common health struggles. But you can turn it off.

Dr. Richard Johnson has been on the cutting edge of research into the cause of obesity for more than a decade. His team’s discovery of the fructose-powered survival switch - a metabolic pathway that animals in nature turn on and off as needed, but that our modern diet has permanently fixed in the “on” position, where it becomes a fat switch - revolutionized the way we think about why we gain weight.

In Nature Wants Us to Be Fat, he details the mounting evidence on how this switch is responsible both for excess fat storage and for many of the major diseases endemic to the Western world, including heart disease, cancer, and dementia. Dr. Johnson also reveals the surprising link between the survival switch and health conditions such as gout, kidney disease, liver disease, stroke - and even behavioral issues like addiction and ADHD. And, most important, he shares a science-based plan to help listeners fight back against nature.

Guided by ongoing clinical research - plus fascinating observations from the animal kingdom, evolution, and history - Dr. Johnson takes you along on an eye-opening investigation into:

  • What you can do to turn off your survival switch
  • What we have in common with hibernating bears, sperm whales, and the world’s fattest bird
  • Why it’s fructose (not glucose) that drives insulin resistance and metabolic disease
  • The foods we eat that trigger the body to make its own fructose
  • The surprising role salt and dehydration play in fat accumulation

Dr. Johnson not only provides new recommendations for how we can prevent or treat obesity, but also how we can use this information to reduce our risk of developing disease. Nature wants us to be fat, and when we understand why, we gain the tools we need to lose weight and optimize our health.

This book changed my life, its just so spot on

This is one of the best books I have ever listened to, The information is captivating, addictive and eye-opening. I find myself constantly rewinding sections to hear it again and make sure I heard it correct the first time. This is my daily commute go-to, forget listening to the radio, music or negative world news - do yourself a favour and get smarter by understanding why we get fat and how we take control back of our own outcomes through education. I have not even finished this book and I was keen to share my thoughts on how it makes me feel and the changes I have adopted in my own lifestyle - I am dreading the thought of the audiobook coming to the end as it inspires me and is motivating a better me and I just don't know if any other books as good as this exist. Ultimately I will probably re-listen to the whole book from the beginning again to ensure I fully absorb the learnings it's teaching me. Thank you to the writer (and reader) who keep me wanting more and for the years of collaborative research, it would have taken to bring this book together.

Worthwhile

This book contains many insights derived from data by distinguished modern day dietary specialist.
unfortunately he didn't add the magic of he himself narrating it. no doubt he's far too busy for that.
it is full of insights and is really a book about understanding Metabolic disease and how you can reverse it.

LCHF fan

Some really interesting information and perspectives in here but sometimes themes were either poorly explained or too thoroughly explained. Leaving you wonder if he read his own work before he published it. Still, worth listening to if you’re interested in LCHF eating or any of its low carb equivalents!

So informative.

Have been waiting for this book to become available after hearing Dr. Johnson on The Drive with Peter Attia. This has been an eye opener for me and so appreciative of his research and sharing of knowledge. Maybe I can at last keep off these stubborn pounds of fat. Already lost 2 pounds before end of book. Good start.

Solid Book

I really enjoyed this book and found it extremely revealing. I felt it had a lot of information I wasn't exposed to in the past. I am overly impressed with the way Dr Johnson is able to formulate questions and then find/shape/create studies that would answer those questions. That seems like an almost impossible task. Then, being able to take that research and put it into a book like this, it's just remarkable. I am very well read in the very low carb community. Although there were a few parts that I disagreed with, I felt that his point of view was very well articulated and not argumentative. I found his humble approach to science and the betterment of mankind very refreshing. I would recommend this book to anyone! I am still blown away by the addiction components in fructose that are discussed in this book and exposed by the science... I still can't stop thinking about it.

Interesting review of emerging science

an interesting review of emerging science in human metabolism, energy physiology, and diet. In some cases there seems to be extrapolation from observations in animals that goes further than it should, but in general it is well sourced.

Unfortunately, the reading is done in a slow and exaggerated sing-songy voice as if reading a children's story for toddlers. I found increasing the speed to 1.2x was helpful.

Science + Opinions

I liked that he lays out a simple formula of staying away from larger than 8 grams of fructose if you want to not trigger a cascade of bad health. However, he mixes a lot of opinion on the science and sometimes it takes away the credibility of the science. For example, he goes to great lengths to describe how hunter/gatherers from the past benefited from our fructose switch. However he can't also realize that all of the rest of the year those same people would have been primarily eating red meat, so why does he insist on lots of opinions about the dangers of red meat even though that is perhaps the single greatest non-inflamitory food that we certainly have evolved to eat. Also his hall pass offered to Gatorade simply because his good friend made it was not consistent with how fructose would lower ATP and contribute to NAFLD, diabetes, and other conditions. Also his concern of LDL-c needs to be reexamined...especially after within a few weeks when Dave Feldman releases the Lean Mass Hyper Responder study results showing high LDL-c on a low-carb diet is not contributing to plaque formation or progression outside at rates different than "good" LDL-c levels.

Very informative and excellent

The reading voice is somewhat automated and difficult to listen. Content is amazing. Everyone should read that to understand the human nature and survival switch

Good but could have been better

The author clearly understands his area of research and the two sugar theory may help to understand the 2 compartment problem and this is the main takeaway for me.

However he strays into subject areas like salt’s impact on health and a cholesterol model from the mid 20th Century without the same rigour and this undermines the book as a whole.

What would be brilliant is for someone to do a meta analysis of all the research on mitrocondria, MToR, AMPK, survival switch, fat development, macro and micro nutrients etc and come up with a more complete model of health rather than do a bit of very focussed research which has some merit on its own but then just slam other models willy-nilly around it to give more gravitas.

I would also have preferred a English narrator…

controversial theory not convincingly backed up

I understood the argument that getting fat is a survival process gone awry in the human context. I just didn't feel there's enough Rct or epidemiological evidence that fructose , dehydration etc I had already read The Fat Switch and wasn't sure this added to that given the ambiguous reasearch results

Mostly good new information

The material is very new and radical and if true will turn things on their head in the healthcare industry. However one concern, he talks about the long since debunked "LDL is bad cholesterol" theory. Many recent studies have concluded that LDL is health giving as a lipid. It's actually the damaged small dense LDL that's very harmful. The LDL is more likely to be damaged by a high GI diet than from eating cholesterol. Although a high fat diet boosts LDL levels the healthy LDL ratio is FAR greater than in a high GI diet.

Very informative. Worth reading.

Well narrated book with insights concerning metabolic syndrome. The book is based on scientifical studies comparing different types of diet and which one is more suited for people with diabetes type 2, overweight, sugar addiction, etc. The writer talks about the switch diet, keto diet, mediterranean diet and paleo and how to turn off the survival mode (based on carbs and retain them, galning weight) and how to turn on the burn mode (burning fat).

Informative and detailed exploration of fat switch hypothesis

Most detailed exploration and expansion on uric acid impact on obesity. Uncovers some uncomfortable evidence that should be unnerving to the international sugar cartel if known by the public.

Most likely it will be suppressed, defunded or ridiculed,

A fair bit of repetition in the chapters though I think acceptable given the complexity of the topic. Recommend highly.
