Aus einer verarmten korsischen Adelsfamilie stammend, nahm Napoleon Bonaparte im nachrevolutionären, krisengeschüttelten Frankreich einen kometenhaften Aufstieg. Mit 24 Jahren war er bereits General, wurde wenig später Oberkommandierender der Italienarmee und schließlich durch einen Staatsstreich erster Konsul. Mit 35 Jahren krönte er sich eigenhändig zum Kaiser. Das Glück verließ ihn auf dem Zenit seiner Macht. Die Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig 1813 besiegelte sein Schicksal, Napoleon wurde auf Elba verbannt. Doch er kehrte zurück. Bei Waterloo schlug er seine letzte Schlacht und verlor. St. Helena, eine vereinsamte Insel im Südatlantik, wurde zum Ort seiner letzten Verbannung.
