Story
Reframing aging as "a passage of discovery and engagement", Palmer says, "Old is just another word for nothing left to lose, a time to take bigger risks on behalf of the common good." On the Brink of Everything is not a "guide to" or "handbook for" getting old. Instead, it's Palmer turning the prism of insight on his experience as a way of encouraging listeners to do the same with theirs. In elegant prose and lyrical poetry, he offers a set of meditations on the meanings of one's life - past, present, and future.

Publisher's Summary
An inspiring memoir of life, love, loss, and new beginnings by the widower of best-selling author and filmmaker Amy Krouse Rosenthal, whose last act of love before her death was setting the stage for her husband’s life without her in a Modern Love column in the New York Times.
On March 3, 2017, Amy Krouse Rosenthal penned a Modern Love column for the New York Times - "You May Want to Marry My Husband". It appeared 10 days before her death from ovarian cancer. A heartbreaking, wry, brutally honest, and creative play on a personal ad - in which a dying wife encouraged her husband to go on and find happiness after her demise - the column quickly went viral, reaching more than five million people worldwide.
In My Wife Said You May Want to Marry Me, Jason describes what came next, even as he struggled with her loss. Surveying his life before, with, and after Amy, Jason ruminates on love, the pain of watching a loved one suffer, and what it means to heal - how he and their three children, despite their profound sorrow, went on. Jason’s emotional journey offers insights on dying and death and the excruciating pain of losing a soulmate and illuminates the lessons he learned.
As he reflects on Amy’s gift to him - a fresh start to fill his empty space with a new story - Jason describes how he continues to honor Amy’s life and her last wish and how he seeks to appreciate every day and live in the moment while trying to help others coping with loss. My Wife Said You May Want to Marry Me is the poignant, unreserved, and inspiring story of a great love, the aftermath of a marriage ended too soon, and how a surviving partner eventually found a new perspective on life’s joys in the wake of tremendous loss.

Beautiful read
I listened to this audiobook after hearing a podcast with Jason Rosenthal and Sam Harris, which I found incredibly moving. I found this audiobook equally—if not more—moving, and loved that it was narrated by Rosenthal himself.

Your Wife Was Right!
I wanted to read this book because I listened to the Ted Talk given by Jason B Rosenthal at a time when I was searching for some understanding of grief and how to survive it. I wondered if my own pathetic story had any right to be put in the same category as this story. At the same time, there is no more useless exercise than comparing pain, so I stopped, and listened and learned. But, this story is so much more than one of loss, regret and pain, it's a story of hope. It's a story of generosity, of a woman so in tune with herself and the world that she was a giver, who gave something to everyone, not just her husband and family. Google Amy Krouse Rosenthal and discover her for yourself. I was compelled to, after listening to Jason's story. In doing so I found one of her many picture books for children, "I wish you more." Then I found her Ted Talks. One of them, "7 Notes On Life," had a huge impact on me and still influences my thoughts and choices, positively. The story of "The Beckoning of Lovely," is powerful story and the theme through it all is, to make the most of our time here, creating something, which is exactly what Amy did. It is something I've begun to do, inspired by Jason and Amy's story, I'm beginning to create. It's small and it's out of my comfort zone, but the positive energy is empowering.
Jason leaves us with the thought, What will you do with your blank space? It's worth thinking about.
I found the narration easy to listen to and the pauses appropriate and natural.
