Story
On the morning of March 27, 1995, four quick shots cracked through Milan’s elegant streets. Maurizio Gucci, heir to the fabulous fashion dynasty, had been ambushed, slain on the steps to his office by an unknown gunman. Two years later, Milan’s chief of police entered the sumptuous palazzo of Maurizio’s ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani - nicknamed “the Black Widow” by the press - and arrested her for the murder. Did Patrizia kill her ex-husband because his spending was wildly out of control? Or is it possible Patrizia didn’t do it at all?

The tragic story of Susan Powell and her murdered boys, Charlie and Braden, is the only case that rivals the Jon Benet Ramsey saga in the annals of true crime. When the pretty, blonde Utah mother went missing in December of 2009 the media was swept up in the story - with lenses and microphones trained on Susan's husband, Josh. He said he had no idea what happened to his young wife, and that he and the boys had been camping in the middle of a snowstorm.

Truths from an Unreliable Witness is a fiercely honest and wryly funny memoir of melancholy, love, marriage, the loss of love and marriage, homelessness, of hotel rooms strewn with empty mini-bar bottles of vodka, of waking from a two-week coma, of putrid drug dens and using a jungle to confront yourself. It is about hitting rock bottom and then realising you are only halfway down. Ultimately, it's about hanging on to your last straw of sanity and finding laughter in the darkest of times. You may want to sit down for this....

One late spring evening in 2010, Shannan Gilbert - after running through the oceanfront community of Oak Beach screaming for her life - went missing. No one who had heard of her disappearance thought much about what had happened to the 24-year-old: She was a Craigslist escort who had been fleeing a scene - of what, no one could be sure. The Suffolk County police, too, seemed to have paid little attention - until seven months later, when an unexpected discovery in a bramble alongside a nearby highway turned up four bodies, all evenly spaced, all wrapped in burlap.

Dorothy Davis and Kerry Whelan came from different parts of Sydney, mixed in quite different circles, and led completely different lives.

Publisher's Summary
One of Time magazine's must-read books of 2019.
With a new and exclusive afterword.
How does it feel to be betrayed by your closest friend?
A close friend who turns out to be the most prolific grifter in New York City....
This is the true story of Anna Delvey, the fake heiress whose dizzying deceit and elaborate con-artistry deceived the Soho hipster scene before her ruse was finally and dramatically exposed.
After meeting through mutual friends, the 'Russian heiress' Anna Delvey and Rachel DeLoache Williams soon became inseparable. Theirs was an intoxicating world of endless excess: high dining, personal trainer sessions, a luxury holiday...and Anna footed almost every bill.
But after Anna's debit card was declined in a Moroccan medina whilst on holiday in a five-star luxury resort, Rachel began to suspect that her increasingly mysterious friend was not all she seemed.
This is the incredible story of how Anna Sorokin conned the high-rollers of the NYC social scene and convinced her close friend of an entirely concocted fantasy, the product of falsified bank documents, bad cheques and carefully edited online photos.
Written by Rachel DeLoache Williams, the Vanity Fair photography editor who believed Anna's lies before helping the police to track her down (fittingly, deciphering Anna's location using Instagram), this is Catch Me If You Can with Instagram filters.
Between Anna, Fyre Festival's Billy McFarland (Anna even tried to scam Billy) and Elizabeth Holmes, whose start-up app duped the high and mighty of Silicon Valley, this is the year of the scammer.
Critic Reviews
"'A Catch Me If You Can for the internet age... What Anna did was make Instagram flesh." (Guardian)
"At a time when we are obsessed with true-crime...Anna Sorokin is the real deal. That doesn't make it right. But oh, it tastes good." (Pandora Sykes, Elle)
"Anna looked at the soul of New York and recognized that if you distract people with shiny objects, they will be virtually unable to see anything else. And the thing was: it was so easy." (New York Magazine)

I had watched the Netflix series ‘Inventing Anna’ and wondered how the events in the story affected people in real life. Now I know. Rachel seems like a lovely decent person who trusted somebody who wasn’t. This book is written with respect and compassion. Recommend!

Interesting perspective to the case
I was always so interested in Anna Delvey's case
after watchind the series on Netflix. This book is a great perspective from the closest friend who witnessed it all.
definitely worth the read as i've heard some podcasters get some details slightly inaccurate. It was refreshing and entertaining to hear Rachel's side of the story.

AMAZING BOOK
Wow, what can I say about this book other than you have to read this book. Such an intriguing story that will keep you hooked. I listened to this book in the shower (played it through bluetooth speakers), in the car, at work everywhere. I’ve listened to this book like four or five times it’s become one of my go to audio books. Rachel’s story of how she got roped in by Anna is amazing but also kind of scary because you realise that this could happen to you. Anna is so manipulative but highly intelligent so it makes sense that she was able to fool so many people including Rachel.

Enjoyable to listen to, heartbreaking to hear.
I have just finished this book just after the 1 year anniversary of Anna Delvey going to prison to serve her prison sentence. It was a really interesting book. It was really interesting to hear about Anna Delvey from a former friend’s perspective and knowing that Rachel DeLoache Williams had to be a very strong woman to deal with so many things falling apart at during a very short amount of time. I’m glad Rachel is doing better now and I wish her nothing but the best if she chooses to continue to write. I’d be interested to see what she would write next.

You need an open mind
I would implore readers to go into this book with an open mind. I feel that it is easy to judge the author based on hearsay and through media reports. The book gave me a great insight into what lead up to the con, how the author felt and the aftermath.
I have so much respect for the author and how she handled the situation.

A set design with no character
This would have been better if author did as podcast with interviews to create life to this endless narrative of spaces and objects. It’s way too descriptive and no sense of character which makes sense as author does production design so it feels you are listening to someone designing a set with a little girl narrating.
Also why is the author going on an expensive trip and not expecting to pay some of it. It doesn’t provide inside into her own motivations and her own lifestyle choices or why these young people live like this or the social context this con woman could exist.
