About this listen

"I am given to something which a man never pardons in a woman. You will draw away as though I were a snake when you hear."

With this warning, Sybylla confesses to her rich and handsome suitor that she is given to writing stories and bound, therefore, on a brilliant career.

In this ironically titled and exuberant work by Miles Franklin, originally published in 1901, Sybylla tells the story of growing up passionate and rebellious in rural New South Wales, where the most that girls could hope for was to marry or to teach. Sybylla will do neither, but that doesn't stop her from falling in love, and it doesn't make the choices any easier.

I liked her tussle with both sides of a point in her own mind

This is a story not about a lost Australia, but a story that can give us all a bridge to understanding that Australia. Sensitive, passionate, sad... this story is to the Australian Bush what One Day is to London.

A forgotten pleasure

WHY IS SYBYLLA SO CAUGHT UP IN HER APPEARANCE! She is such an anoying character who literally rejects any opportunity in life because she is too “ugly”, she is so pick me it’s anoying. I would most definitely not recommend this book, it was boring and the characters anoyed me. The performance of the reader was amazing though, they did an amazing job for such a boring book.

Boring pick me sybylla

I found this book Boring old and childish. It was enthusiastically reading the characters came to life because of it.
