About this listen

The peace of a Midlands village is upset when local businessman Harry Bowers doesn’t return from choir practice.

More concerned than the man’s own wife, it would seem, investigating officer Detective Sergeant Sunita Roy becomes convinced he has been done away with.

But there is no trace of the man, just a litany of evidence of an ailing marriage and a nose-diving business venture.

In charge of her first serious case, DS Roy will struggle to win the respect of her colleagues—in particular her Brummie boss, DCI Gavin Roscoe. All that whilst fighting off the intentions of an increasingly desperate suitor.

Who had it in for the budding chorister? And is Roy tough enough to break down the defences and prejudices of Middle England?

I loved the story, unfortunately it got a bit confusing at times. Enjoyed Colin’s narration , he was very good with the accents. Will definitely listen to another in the series. Easy to listen to.

Great story, great narrator.

I found this compelling, with interesting characters. The narrator did a fabulous job. Book evolved into a movie in my head. Loved it. Downloading the next in the series.

Thoroughly Enjoyed

I found the basic plot of this book to be simplistic but a little muddled in places. However, the whole book was written in a strange style - I didn't feel I was listening to a novel, but perhaps a newspaper account or script of a TV show. It was altogether rambling, including too much information. There was no real flow, and this fault was enhanced by the stilted narration.

Interesting plot but spoiled by style

I enjoyed the story line and characters but at times I was not a fan of the narrator. It seemed he wanted it done and dusted. Overall a great read

This book was published in 2022 but feels like something decades older. A female DS afraid to tell her boss she's being stalked, even though it's rapidly escalating, affecting her work and causing risk to her flatmate? In 2022? Not likely.

And this is yet another book where the cops don't use any forensics that would inconvenience the author in providing clues too soon. Handwriting analysis has been in use for what, at least a century, but it takes these cops weeks to submit a suspicious "goodbye" note for analysis. Again and again, the author flubs police procedure so he can keep the story going.

Dated and lazy writing

There were so many holes in this story , probably the worst murder mystery I’ve ever read

Bad story

I love Colin Mace as a narrator which is why I chose this book. Sadly, the story doesn’t do his voice justice. I gave up half way through.

Don’t bother
