About this listen

Addison Harper is abruptly summoned to Milverton at the behest of an abrasive lawyer. He plans to be in and out, back to the city lickety-split. Instead, he finds himself charmed by the small town with its delightful and eccentric residents, not to mention the rather easy-on-the-eye Sergeant Jake Murphy.

Despite the rocky start, Addison admits he's had a pleasant day out. That is, until returning to find the prickly old lawyer on the floor, and very much dead. Worse, it looks like murder, and Addison's fingerprints are all over the crime scene.

Murder on Milverton Square is the first in a wonderful new cozy mystery series set in an enchanting small town nestled amongst stunning New Zealand scenery. The Milverton Mysteries features a chaotic cast of local busybodies, delicious baked treats, a demanding and disdainful ginger cat, a very slow-burn romance with a rather appealing policeman, and of course, murder . . .

Addison Harper works remotely for a large soulless company in Wellington, NZ. When he takes a phone call from a crotchety lawyer in the quaint town of Milverton, he’s surprised to learn he’s the sole heir to his great uncle’s estate. Traveling up to Milverton, he finds the lawyer just as repellant in real life and he can’t be the only one, because when Addison arrives for a follow-up appointment, he finds the man dead. Despite how cute the policeman looks, suspicion falls on Addison and he works to clear his name by finding the real culprit. Along the way, he makes new friends amongst the townsfolk, but also some enemies, which just might make him the next victim.

This Kiwi cosy mystery / romance was extremely pleasant and enjoyable with some cute and fun moments. The romance is slowburn and will obviously develop more as the series progresses. I really liked the townsfolk that befriended Addison—there are a few great characters that I hope we’ll see a lot more of. I was also fascinated by the local politics the town is embroiled in, it gave a good backdrop to the town. I’m definitely going to see out further books in the series! 🎧 I was in two minds about the audio narrator, Philip Battley. On the one hand, he has a very pleasant voice and he performed well. On the other hand, he’s a British actor with a refined English accent who was in Downton Abbey while all the characters are New Zealanders. It felt like the story was set in an English village, which confused me at first. I guess I would have hated it if he had tried to do a Kiwi accent badly.

Cute Kiwi murder-mystery with a slowburn romance!

This was a delightful cozy mystery set in New Zealand. There is a slow burn romance but not much happens in this book, I expect it will progress further in furture books so if you are looking for high spice then this is not for you. The narration was excellent, I was worried that it would be a cringy listen to a mangled kiwi accent. Fortunately we have a more nuetral British accent which works well with the story. Listened as part of the audible plus catalogue, have already purchased the next books in the series.

Sweet listen
