Publisher's Summary
Murder in the Manor is the debut novel in a charming new cozy mystery series by Fiona Grace.
Lacey Doyle, 39 years old and freshly divorced, needs a drastic change. She needs to quit her job, leave her horrendous boss and New York City, and walk away from the fast life. Making good on her childhood promise to herself, she decides to walk away from it all and relive a beloved childhood vacation in the quaint English seaside town of Wilfordshire.
Wilfordshire is exactly as Lacey remembers it, with its ageless architecture, cobblestone streets, and with nature at its doorstep. Lacey doesn’t want to go back home, and spontaneously, she decides to stay and to give her childhood dream a try: She will open her own antique shop.
Lacey finally feels that her life is taking a step in the right direction...until her new star customer turns up dead. As the newcomer in town, all eyes are on Lacey, and it’s up to her to clear her own name. With a business to run, a next-door neighbor-turned-nemesis, a flirty baker across the street, and a crime to solve, is this new life all that Lacey thought it would be?

Reader annoying
I only listened to this because a friend had read the book and said it was really good so I bought it without listening to the preview. Mistake. Her slow sing song reading was so annoying. I thought I’d get used to it but it was like nails on a blackboard. Her accents were good but she sounded as though she was in love with her own voice and the ability to modulate it incessantly, like a singer doing scales. I’ll read any future books in this series unless they use a different reader. Ruined!

Nice little cozy mystery
Enjoyed this cozy mystery. There were a few awkward areas that quickly passed. As far as the narration, I'm of two minds. I felt Mary Sarah did an excellent job at operating the different characters voices. She did put a lot of drama in the narration as well. However, for much of the narration it felt like she was trying to put me to sleep. It was a slow mesmerizing performance that felt over the top. I also felt a little off since the main character was American, who had a British accent??? I know the logic of hiring a British narrator since most of the story is set in England, but it was as small bit off putting for that inconsistency.

enjoyable story, takes time to warm up to heroine
I will look forward to the next book in the series, but would prefer a different narrator. From the moment she first spoke the first word, I was thinking to myself, "My, she speaks in a very odd accent!" she seems to have invented her own hybrid American-UK accent. She speaks very clearly and at a calm, measured pace, but I found her strange accent and almost singsong, lilting cadence distracting.

ok
The mystery is pretty good, but the story seems forced at some points. The plot drags because there is not enough going on to move the plot. Mary Sarah saves the book with her narration. She adds much needed drama with her voice that kept me listening.to the end.

I actually think I might have enjoyed the story, but I just couldn’t stand to listen to one more minute of this narrator and her breathless, overly dramatic delivery. Will have to try and read the ending for myself.

Kept Me Guessing
Would have been 5 stars. The issue I have is with the recording itself not the performance or the story. Both of those were great. In a couple places I noticed I was hearing parts of previously heard chapters. It kind of threw me at first and made me think I'd accidentally pressed the timeline bar and jumped back to an earlier part of the story (or somehow developed precognative abilities and had mentally "known" a part of the story I'd not yet heard). I think it only happened at the end of two or three chapters.

Not very well researched
I am finding this story very annoying as an English listener. Any place in Britain with Shire after the name is a County, NOT a small seaside town! It must have been written by someone who is not British to make that mistake and this, plus the readers very slow voice is boring me so much I keep falling asleep. I doubt if I will finish the book, I use audio books as I cannot read printed ones any more. I think the story may be sort of ok ish but cannot listen to the rest as I am now getting very annoyed with the mistakes which should have been corrected prior to publication! Please edit correctly and don't publish any more like this. Also, try a reader who does not bore us to sleep with her soooo slow reading voice. Liven it up a bit. Having read some other reviews I see I am not the only one with similar views! It's such a shame to spoil a fairly good mystery with the wrong narrator. Looking at the later books I find they have different readers so I will give them a try before I condemn the author. ;-) Publishers, please remind your authors about correctness with English words like the incorrect (Wilfordshire)! Poetic licence does not stretch to place names In England, it just grates on my ears and probably others too judging by some of the comments. A bit more research about the county would have been useful in this instance!
