Er gehört zu den bekanntesten literarischen Figuren aller Zeiten, und geht zurück auf einen anonymen Text, der erstmals im Jahr 1781 in einem Sammelband erschienen ist. Es ist möglich, dass dieser Text vom echten Baron Münchhausen stammt. Gottfried August Bürger adaptierte fünf Jahre später den Stoff für das Buch, das die tolldreisten Phantasiegeschichten des Barons schildert und zu einem Bestseller wurde. Die Buchvorlage wurde von Heinz Schimmelpfennig (1919-2010) leicht gekürzt und eingelesen.
