Die Novelle "Mozart auf der Reise nach Prag" erschien in der Buchausgabe im November 1855, nachdem sie zuvor im "Morgenblatt für gebildete Leser" abgedruckt worden war. Datiert war die Buchausgabe jedoch auf das Jahr 1856, zur Feier des 100. Geburtstages Wolfgang Amadeus Mozarts. 1852 hatte Eduard Mörike mit der Arbeit an der Novelle begonnen.
