After seven years of bitter war, the end has come at last for the conflict known infamously as the Horus Heresy. Terra now lies within the Warmaster’s sights, the Throneworld and the seat of his father’s rule. Horus’ desire is nothing less than the death of the Emperor of Mankind and the utter subjugation of the Imperium. He has become the ascendant vessel of Chaos and amassed a terrible army with which to enact his will and vengeance. But the way to the Throne will be hard as the primarch Rogal Dorn, the Praetorian and protector of Terra, marshals the defences.

Publisher's Summary
A Primarchs Novel
"Banish all thoughts of mercy, because mercy is the plaything of the coward and the lie of the tyrant. Today, the blade descends on tyranny's neck."
Mortarion makes his debut in the fifteenth Primarchs novel, and wastes no time in bringing his own brand of grim justice to the galaxy.
Listen to it because....
The fifteenth instalment in The Horus Heresy Primarchs series, The Pale King tells of the atrocities committed by the Reaper in the name of justice—and the consequences of challenging his methods.
The story:
Once, the Galaspar System suffered under the cruel regime of the Order. Billions of people toiled endlessly to enrich their masters, enduring short lives of poverty, squalor and fear. But Galaspar’s sins did not go unnoticed by the Imperium, and so Death itself sentenced the Order to annihilation.
Mortarion, newly uplifted to commander of the Death Guard, descended upon the world, and with him came a slaughter of untold proportions. The sheer brutality of Mortarion’s campaign left the Imperium appalled. Seeking to understand its horrors, two noble primarchs have come to Galaspar, summoning their brother to account for his actions. But the Pale King brooks no challenge to his methods, for when the scythe falls, it reaps a gruesome toll.
Written By David Annandale. Narrated by Jonathan Keeble. Running time 5 hours and 34 minutes (approx).

Bland and Generic.
Honestly? It was kind of bland and generic: certainly nothing that we haven't seen before. All spectacle and very little substance. That's sad when you consider that the authors have been working on the Horus Heresy for nearly two decades and most of the other titles have developed in characterisation, scope, and complexity. It could have been a story about ANY of the Primarch's whom used more brutal methodology. We get no real insights into Mortarion or his prejudices against the Terran Death Guard, the enemy are extremely generic dystopian sci-fi human goons, and none of the other Death Guard have anything approaching a personality. Seriously, when the Primarch novel about Angron (whose whole outlook on life is 'axe goes chop') contains more nuance and has a better character arc then you know you've got problems.
Save your time and read/listen to 'The Buried Dagger' instead if you want to understand Mortarion.
Definitely one of the weaker entries in the Horus Heresy era and pr

Very Little Substance
Jonathan Keeble does his best to enliven this story, but he has very little to work with. Listeners looking for more insight into pre-Chaos Mortarion will be disappointed in this tale of the Death Guard destroying a faceless and cliched slave society called The Order. There was an opportunity here to bring some order to the characterisation of Mortarion, who has been very inconsistently written in the HH books, but that opportunity was missed. There's nothing here that you can't get from the superior The Hidden Dagger book.

Nothing special, mediocre at best. I felt ripped of by how short it was. I wanted so much more from this book but was left disappointed.
