Publisher's Summary

I was hesitant to try my luck at listening to this novel in French but, as the English version is not available, I thought I would give it a go. The reader is excellent - very clear. Good variety in the voices and both male and female were appropriate. I listened at .95 to make it easier. I think the translation improved Donna Leon’s writing by using more colourful expressions than she chose, while remaining true to the sense of her words. I looked up a few words and expressions but only to improve my vocabulary not because I couldn’t guess their meaning. So you can judge my level of French, I have read all the Harry Potter books in French but had to look up a lot more words. So if you like Donna Leon and are fairly fluent in French this could be for you. The 4 stars for the story was because the solution was fairly clear halfway through, though Brunetti took til the last chapter to work it out.
