About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Over 1 million Discworld audiobooks sold – discover the extraordinary universe of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld like never before.

The audiobook of Monstrous Regiment is narrated by Katherine Parkinson, star of The IT Crowd and Here We Go. BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.

'THAT'S THE TROUBLE ABOUT THE GOOD GUYS AND THE BAD GUYS! THEY'RE ALL GUYS!'

In the small yet aggressive country of Borogravia, there are strict rules citizens must follow. For a start, women belong in the kitchen - not in jobs, pubs, or indeed trousers. And certainly not on the front line.

Polly Perks has to become a boy in a hurry if she wants to find her missing brother in the army. Cutting off her hair and wearing the trousers is easy. Going to war however, is not.

Polly and her fellow raw recruits are suddenly in the thick of a losing battle. All they have on their side is the most artful sergeant in the army and a vampire with a lust for coffee.

It's time to make a stand.

The first book in the Discworld series-The Colour of Magic-was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

Critic Reviews

'Like Jonathan Swift, Pratchett uses his other world to hold up a distorting mirror to our own, and like Swift he is a satirist of enormous talent ... incredibly funny ... compulsively readable.'
'A true original among contemporary writers - a fantasist who loves naff humour and silly names, and yet whose absurd world is, at heart, a serious portrait of the jingoistic fears that keep us at each other's throats.'
'The great Terry Pratchett, whose wit is metaphysical, who creates an energetic and lively secondary world, who has a multifarious genius for strong parody as opposed to derivative manipulation of past motifs, who deals with death with startling originality. Who writes amazing sentences.' (A.S. Byatt)

Discworld at its best - mixing humour, provocative parallels, sarcasm with elevating mirth. Coupled with a nicely invisible narrator - this is a must listen.

So clever and funny with a magnificent finish

Top quality story, and I was excited to see that Katherine Parkinson was reading it.
But, for me, she didn’t bring the right voices to it. And the passion wasn’t there. There were moments when I was fully with her, but mostly, it kinda sounded like she was a little on the uninterested side.
That said, it’s a brilliant story that everyone should read. Because whilst it’s Discworld, it’s not so heavily into it that you’d be confused. It’s a fantastic stand alone. Great views on feminism, and religion, and the ridiculousness of war. And also shows how, with just a bit of encouragement and some solid mates, anything can be achieved by anyone.

Wanted to be more impressed
