About this listen

Moby-Dick is widely considered to be the Great American Novel and a treasure of world literature. The story details the adventures of the wandering sailor Ishmael and his voyage on the whale ship Pequod, commanded by Captain Ahab. Ishmael soon learns that Ahab seeks one specific whale: Moby Dick, a ferocious, enigmatic white sperm whale. In a previous encounter, the whale destroyed Ahab's boat and bit off his leg. And Ahab intends to take revenge.

Nothing more than a mock-Shakespearean poetic novella shrouded by Wikipedic-like diversions, and enmeshed with obscure philosophical and metaphysical musings. What is all the fuss about this book? I think it probably far too cumbersome and lyrical even for it's time.

As an aside, I read this immersively which turned out to be all the better to notice the numerous reading errors of the narrator e.g. 'jolly' instead of 'volley' of thunder! He's not the only narrator to mis-read the written words, and it illustrates the value of not just relying on the audiobook edition especially for non-fiction works.

Eventually got to read it ... dissappointing!
