“Things To Come” – so war eine Aufnahme des Trompeters Dizzy Gillespie mit seiner Big Band vom Juli 1946 benannt: “Die Dinge, die da kommen sollten”, das war nicht bloß ein beliebiger Titel, sondern eher schon eine programmatische Ansage. Der neue musikalische Stil, den man Bebop nannte, bedeutete den Aufbruch in eine neue Ära des Jazz. Dessen waren sich die namhaften Vertreter dieser Stilrichtung sehr wohl bewusst. Erstmals betrachteten sich Jazzmusiker nicht mehr nur als Unterhalter des Publikums, sie waren überzeugt, mit ihrer Musik etwas Besonderes in die Welt zu setzen. Mit einem Wort: sie empfanden sich als Künstler. Und so wie viele Künstler anderer Sparten befanden sie sich in einer Außenseiterrolle.
