Miss Marple è nei Caraibi. Il luogo è splendido, il clima ideale, eppure l'anziana signora si annoia. L'unico diversivo consiste nell'ascoltare i racconti del maggiore Palgrave, instancabile narratore di avventure di caccia, vecchi scandali e omicidi rimasti impuniti.
Un noioso tran-tran, insomma, se non fosse che proprio dopo uno di questi racconti il maggiore viene ritrovato cadavere. E Miss Marple intuisce subito che non si è trattato di morte naturale.
Possibile che qualcuno abbia voluto tappargli la bocca? E dove è finita la fotografia che Palgrave in una delle ultime occasioni aveva detto di volerle mostrare? Dimenticata la noia, l'intrepida zitella è pronta a gettarsi a capofitto in una nuova indagine.
