Story
Why do you lose arguments with people who know MUCH LESS than you? Why can you recognise that woman, from that thing...but can't remember her name? And why, after your last break-up, did you find yourself in the foetal position on the sofa for days, moving only to wipe the snot and tears haphazardly from your face? Here's why: the idiot brain. For something supposedly so brilliant and evolutionarily advanced, the human brain is pretty messy, fallible and disorganised.

In the words of the Buddha, the four foundations of mindfulness (the four satipatthanas) are "the direct path for the purification of beings, for the surmounting of sorrow and lamentation, for the disappearance of dukkha (suffering) and discontent, for acquiring the true method, for the realization of Nibbana." Within the quintessential discourse called the Satipatthana Sutta, we find the Buddha's seminal teachings about the practice of meditation.

Best book on meditation
By far the best book on meditation. It’s jam pack full of practical advice. It’s written beautifully and very easy to understand. All that’s left after reading it is put everything in practice. Reading this book several times it only adds to the experience. I’m planning to read it a few times.

Direct, as the title suggests
This book is brimming with practical nuts and bolts advice and wisdom for someone with a regular meditation practice. It might(?) be a bit much for someone totally unfamiliar with meditation, but it would be excellent if you truly wanted to try sitting on a regular basis. There is a pretty serious discussion of concentration-one pointed attention on a single object, like the breath-as a means of strengthening mindfulness that i found very helpful. That theme of developing concentration in tandem with mindfulness and how they serve each other is something i don't think i had read or heard explained so clearly before. I would absolutely recommend this book if you sit or really no bullshit want to try sitting. I would say this book would be 100% amazing if you had tried meditating and wanted to have more direction and understand mindfulness more clearly. So, yea in that case, 100% amazing for anyone who meditates.

In plain English, but not an introduction to meditation and mindfulness.
The book was well written and well read, but at times I felt like it was a superiority it's tone and it's teaching. However, it does cover The concept of mindfulness extremely well and very thoroughly. My sense is that I will continue to get a lot out of this book as I practice my meditation over the years.

So basic it's painful.
I'm new to meditation but I know what it is and why I'm interested in it. For me this was a waste of time. Obviously I'm referring to the Audible edition, however hard the performer did try to make it interesting, the content is too simple in a dated way.

Recipe For Mindfulness
Having read (and listened to) plenty of mindfulness books over the years I can say that for those who are looking for a clean and clear introduction to practical mindfulness and meditation, I haven't found a better book.
Every generation complains about how busy things are, but with the momentum of tech, the growth in choices and constant stimulation, we have never been less connected with others and what is going on in our own mind. This book helps us to step back (mentally) and be more aware of our thoughts.
It's not perfect. The chapter I found least useful was the 'What Meditation Isn't" part but the rest was pure gold and more than makes up for it. Don't expect that just reading it will solve your problems, this is just a how to...you have to do... for it to take effect. If you are not prepared to do, then it's probably worth selecting another book, maybe a thriller.
I've gifted the paperback version to friends and family because it was so helpful. I always worry that these types of books are religious, worthy or mystical, instead it was a practical and compassionate approach to managing our own minds and achieving a level of inner peace.

Struggled to finish this. The regular inclusion of long lists of things to remember is offputting. And some of the sections are borderline gibberish in the way they are written.
