Son relatos tiernos, maravillosos, que además nos pintan detalles de la vida cotidiana de hace muchos, muchos años. Gonzalo nació hacia 1195 en Berceo y se educó en el monasterio de San Millán de Suso (La Rioja). Fue clérigo y el primer poeta conocido en nuestra lengua. Compuso su último poema, La Vida de Santa Oria, hacia 1260 y poco después debió de morir (antes del 1264). Escribió sus Milagros de Santa María a lo largo de bastantes años, y para hacerlo tomó noticias de relatos de milagros de la Virgen de textos latinos.
