Publisher's Summary

After a broken love affair, biographer Kate Kennedy retires to a remote cottage on the wild Essex coast to work on her new book - until her landlord’s daughter uncovers a Roman site nearby and long-buried passions are unleashed! In her lonely cottage, Kate is terrorized by mysterious forces. What do these ghosts want? That the truth about the violent events of long ago be exposed or remain concealed?

Kate must struggle for her life against earthbound spirits and ancient curses as hate, jealousy, revenge, and passion do battle across the centuries.

addictive ghost story

I listen and relisten to this story. It becomes more interesting the more you take in it seems to me perhaps because of the amount of detail. Rula Lenska is now one of my favourite narrators. she is sensitive to the characters and story action and has a lovely low pitched pleasant voice that doesn't impinge on the story.

terrible

Probably one of the worst books I have ever listened too. Very repetitive. the main characters just kept doing very unrealistic things that just didn't make sense. And the ending!!! was that even an ending?? very sad I wasted my money on this one.

My favourite book.

My favourite book, but butchered by the reader. Disappointing. I highly recommend reading the paperback instead.

Midnight is a lonely place

I loved this story! It was definitely the best ghost, spirit story I have ever read! Plus an intriguing introduction to the history around Colchester and the east coast of east anglia! The way Barbra Erskine wove the two stories together was remarkable! I thoroughly recommend this book it is amazing! Also the narrator Rula Lenska is superb she reads the story at an extremely good pace interacting all the characters with voices effortlessly! I have given this book 5 stars I wish I could have given it more!

Another good listen

Another Barbara Erskine classic. These are books I will want to read a second and even third times. As usual, the narration was excellent, the writing the same. When I see a book by Barbara erskine, I know it will be worth listening to.

Midnight is a lonely place

Found this story very boring, it went on and on and on in the same vein, could not listen to the second half, have better things to do with 7 hours of my life. Maybe a different narrator would make all the difference !

and scary place!

Now just the front cover of this made me think, "Granny book, skip it!" but it's not, it's really good!

The author is able to keep the tension on high alert throughout, and seeing as it's a fully unabridged version, that's pretty impressive to me! A biographer splits up from her partner and moves to a remote cottage to get on with her new Byron script. The teenager daughter of the family up the road starts a dig at the beach, unearthing roman artifacts. Could these finds explain the changes in behaviour of the girl, or is there some sort of haunting going on?

Too repetitive

I’ve enjoyed other novels by Barbara Erskine but this was too long and too repetitive - how many times do characters need to escape a beach or crash a car? Disappointing.

Not one of her best!

This was quite a good tale, but I got rather fed up with the 'oh now we'll be safe' just before another major disaster, it would have been fine with far fewer of these incidents! Overall it would have been a good story, but it was too over the top with the many many disasters!

Great book but weak ending

Really enjoyed story and suspense it was building. Great description and was drawn into the story. However, disappointing ending, it just stuttered and left me feeling cheated when it had been so good and promised much
