Publisher's Summary

The acclaimed author of Gods of Jade and Shadow returns with a mesmerising feminist re-imagining of Gothic fantasy, in which a young socialite discovers the haunting secrets of a beautiful old mansion in 1950s Mexico.

He is trying to poison me. You must come for me, Noemí. You have to save me.

When glamorous socialite Noemí Taboada receives a frantic letter from her newlywed cousin begging to be rescued from a mysterious doom, it's clear something is desperately amiss. Catalina has always had a flair for the dramatic, but her claims that her husband is poisoning her and her visions of restless ghosts seem remarkable, even for her.

Noemí's chic gowns and perfect lipstick are more suited to cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing, but she immediately heads to High Place, a remote mansion in the Mexican countryside, determined to discover what is so affecting her cousin.

Tough and smart, she possesses an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: not of her cousin's new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemi's dreams with visions of blood and doom.

Her only ally in this inhospitable abode is the family's youngest son. Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help, but might also be hiding dark knowledge of his family's past. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family's once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness.

And Noemí, mesmerised by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to leave this enigmatic house behind....

Luxurious modern Gothic novel w gorgeous narration

Totally addictive modern Gothic novel that takes on colonialism, conquest, race and eugenics in a way that truly turns the power of Empire against itself. Hints of Shirley Jackson and Perkins' The Yellow Wallpaper everywhere in this suffocating narrative of domestic horror. Who says the Gothic is dead?!

Intriguing

A queer tale that I almost lost interest but I needed to see where it went. I still not sure I loved it but the performance was great and overall it was a good book.

Okay, but not for me.

My rating: 5.5/10
Review: The low rating might not be to do with the quality of the book, it was everything that was promised... a Gothic novel and Mexican. I think it was the pace that was the let down for me, I am just not a fan of such slow paced books. It makes Dracula seem fast, and for a novel of this length that isn't good. It did provide some unexpected unique horror, which is what kept me listening. If you like a slow burn and some romance thrown in, you might like it more than me. CW: Cannibalism, sexual assault, incest.

Beautiful story with a unique narrator

I could not get into this physical book so turned to Audible and I agree with other reviews the narrator is interesting, I would not go so far as say sing song but the narrator does announciate well and has a very smooth and flowing voice. Have not heard a narrator speak like this before however given the historical nature of the story I feel it fits.

The story itself is developed slowly, the 'twist' was nothing I had ever anticipated and I believed I had it figured out early however I was very wrong. Each character is developed thoroughly, with beautiful and diverse vocabulary; the villains vs heroes are revealed far into the book so is worth the build up. Description was unparalelled, I did enjoy the vocabulary use and how the narrator did change pitch and tones to align to different characters. The ending was spread over a few chapters and I feel that the ending wrapped everything up rather neatly.

I am glad I gave it a second chance, when reading it I just could not find interest. Will be reading/listening to this authors other books for sure

It’s great, just not for me

I completely understand why people loved this story, the writing is on point and the narration is great (I wish she would have pushed her voice a bit more with different characters, at times it was hard to follow who is talking). Overall great story, it’s just the pacing for me. So so slooooow. But again, if you are fine with that this would be for you.

amazing story even for ppl who don't enjoy horror

I love this story! the mystery is very good, the book is engaging and the characters are all very interesting! You either love them or hate them, there is no in-between. I don't read horror books, I picked it up thinking Mexican Gothic was only a mystery book, but I ended uo enjoying it a lot!

Magic Mushrooms

I was surprised that I actually liked this story, but when I think about it, I do like the genre Silvia told the story inside and out. I liked it when she described the house and Noemi dreams, just the whole story in a natural mystical thrilling horror that has a mix of natural science, Darwinism, folklore and a thrilling atmosphere. The narrator Frankie Corzo was pleasant to listen too.

Absolutely not what I expected

I bought this on the strength of a few BookTubers simply saying it was really good and kinda weird, but not spoiling anything, so neither will I. Suffice it to say I found it intriguing, hard to put down, with well fleshed out characters and well built world, as it were. It's also narrated beautifully. I can't recommend it enough.

Film Noir meets Tim Burton Vibes

What an interestingly smoky ominous storyline. I kept picturing dark shadows and film noir/ vintage dark graphic novel vibes and could imagine this story being produced in film by Tim Burton. Vivid, creepy, sensuous. Protagonist was interesting. I liked her sass! The horror aspect is vivid and grotesque. I would have liked to have found out more about what the father had thought of what had become of them in the end, but it didn't take away from the quality of story.
