Ancak savaş peşini bırakmaz, birliğe katılma emri onu sığındığı ülkede de bulur. Karısı Paula bu emre itaat etmek zorunda olmadığına, özgür bir ülkede yaşayan özgür bir insan olduğuna onu ikna etmeye çalışır. Ferdinand'ın Fransa'ya karşı bu savaşta bir piyon olmasını istememektedir.
