Story
After bottoming out, being institutionalized, and getting sober all by the tender age of fifteen, Moshe Kasher found himself asking: “What’s next?” Over the ensuing decades, he discovered the answer: a lot. There was his time as a boy-king of Alcoholics Anonymous, a kind of pubescent proselytizer for other teens getting and staying sober. He was a rave promoter turned DJ turned sober ecstasy dealer in San Francisco’s techno warehouse party scene of the 1990s.

Is it possible to write a sidesplitting novel about the breakup of the perfect marriage? If the writer is Nora Ephron, the answer is a resounding yes. For in this inspired confection of adultery, revenge, group therapy, and pot roast, the creator of Sleepless in Seattle reminds us that comedy depends on anguish as surely as a proper gravy depends on flour and butter.

Ramble Book is about parenthood, boarding-school trauma, arguing with your partner, bad parties, confrontations on trains, friendship, wanting to fit in, growing up in the '80s, dead dads, teenage sexual anxiety, failed artistic endeavours, being a David Bowie fan and how everything you read, watch and listen to as a child forms a part of the adult you become. It’s also an audiobook about the joys of going off topic and letting your mind wander. And it’s about a short, hairy, frequently confused man called Adam Buxton.

The wry and the heartfelt join in David Rakoff's prose to resurrect that most neglected of literary virtues: wit. As he finds himself in all the far-flung hinterlands of our culture, this fish out of water winds up satirizing himself more than his subject matter, to hilarious effect.

Story
Father Greg Lockwood is unlike any Catholic priest you have ever met - a man who lounges in boxer shorts, who loves action movies, and whose constant jamming on the guitar reverberates "like a whole band dying in a plane crash in 1972". His daughter is an irreverent poet who long ago left the church's country. When an unexpected crisis leads her and her husband to move back into her parents' rectory, their two worlds collide.

Story
At last, the definitive audiobook about perhaps the best cabin crew dramedy ever filmed: View from the Top starring Gwyneth Paltrow. In Ayoade on Top, Richard Ayoade, perhaps one of the most 'insubstantial' people of our age, takes us on a journey from Peckham to Paris by way of Nevada and other places we don't care about. It's a journey deep within, in a way that's respectful and non-invasive; a journey for which we will all pay a heavy price, even if you've waited for the smaller paperback edition. Ayoade argues for the canonisation of this brutal masterpiece.

Story
If there’s one trait that makes someone well-suited to comedy, it’s being able to take a punch - metaphorically and, occasionally, physically. Told with a healthy dose of self-deprecation, A Very Punchable Face reveals the brilliant mind behind some of the dumbest sketches on television, and lays bare the heart and humor of a hardworking guy - with a face you can’t help but want to punch.

Wow the stories just kept getting better
- By Tyren Hones on 11-03-2024
Publisher's Summary
Anyone who has heard David Sedaris speaking live or on the radio will tell you that a collection from him is cause for jubilation. A move to Paris from New York inspired these hilarious pieces, including 'Me Talk Pretty One Day', about his attempts to learn French from a sadistic teacher who declares that 'every day spent with you is like having a caesarean section'.
His family is another inspiration. 'You Can't Kill the Rooster' is a portrait of his brother, who talks incessant hip-hop slang to his bewildered father. And no one hones a finer fury in response to such modern annoyances as restaurant meals presented in ludicrous towers of food and cashiers with six-inch fingernails.

Couldnt finish it
I read all the positive reviews and was excited to listen and hear this writer story.
Unfortunately I found him really dislikeable and the story didn't grab me at all so I gave up after a few hours in - I really did perservere!
Had to remove the book from my library because I was so frustrated I wasted a credit on this crap!

Whack whack whack
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and David's reading of it. Makes you smile and laugh. An honest and entertaining account. I'm just glad I'm not related for fear of what might be written about me. As an Australian I was bemused that a Kookaburra and masturbating sound the same. Whack, whack, whack!!!

David Sedaris is wonderful...
Not just his writing but his speaking and narration is a thrill. He has a way with his mannerisms as well as his comic timing that makes his narration of his book even better. This is my first audio book and what a great choice of book it was... I hope everyone that choses this enjoys it as much as I did.

As expected
If you could sum up Me Talk Pretty One Day in three words, what would they be?
Amusing, cynical, light
Who was your favorite character and why?
Not applicable
What about David Sedaris’s performance did you like?
If you are familiar with David Sedaris from This American Life (as I am) you will know exactly what sort of humour to expect. If you don't like him on TAL then don't buy it.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
It's a comedy book.
Any additional comments?
Not something you would listen to for an extended period, but great for putting on in the car or out jogging. Funny and light.
