Publisher's Summary

On the mountain, the watcher seeks out evil women. And then they die.

Two years ago, when Jake Hunt uncollared his slave, she committed suicide. Guilt-ridden, he will commit to a woman for one night only, devoting his energy to a mountain lodge that caters to a BDSM crowd.

Kallie Masterson is tough. Unwanted as a child, she worked hard to become a wilderness guide. She's proud of who she is, and hurt that Jake frowns on her for acting like a man.

After rescuing the macho guide from a bar fight, Jake is stunned that the ugly men's clothing hides a warm, responsive woman. A submissive woman. When guide business brings her to the lodge on BDSM night, and she is obviously aroused by the play, Jake takes the little sub right into his world of pain and pleasure. He warns her: one night only. But she responds so beautifully - so joyously - under his command, that one night soon becomes two, then three... Then a missing hiker reminds Jake of his past lover, and he realizes he's become too involved. He pulls back.

Meanwhile, the watcher on the mountain has rendered his verdict: Kallie Masterson is evil. The sentence: death.

Awesome narration-style and hot story.

This is the first time I have experienced this style of narration on Audible. Male dialogue is always spoken by a male, even when the point of view is that of a female being narrated by a woman and vice versa. So the male narrator never fakes a female voice and the female narrator doesn't fake a male voice. It all flows very smoothly. In addition, when one narrator describes what the other character is doing, you can hear the other character doing it, for example, moaning or laughing. It is a very effective narration style. I liked it a lot. Sometimes, however, I thought the narrators could have “acted” the voices a bit differently. This was a super-sexy story and could have been even hotter if the voices were modulated a little better during intimate scenes – for example, sexy words spoken in a whisper in someone’s ear could have actually been whispered. It makes a big difference. But I was okay with the performances overall. There is a good story here – the heroine’s background is poignant and beautifully explored in tender moments, and the hero’s tragic loss of a former lover colours his view of love and relationships too. Add in a community of loveable secondary characters in an idyllic location, a murder mystery adding danger, and you have an engaging backdrop to showcase the protagonists’ growing attraction and love. The sexy times here are HOT in a BDSM style following the safe, sane, consensual motto. The whole concept of BDSM is very confronting for me as a reader still trying to get my head around it. Every story I read requires some level of exhibitionism by the couple, which I find a turn off but the characters don’t. Add in the pain from punishment and I struggle, unless I’m convinced by good writing that it’s hot and erotic. I was convinced here. It’s my first book by Cherise Sinclair. Won’t be my last.

Narrating is awful!

The narrators voices were fine but the exchanges of narrators were way too fast. Story line was just ok.

Hot with an element of mystery!!

What made the experience of listening to Master of the Abyss the most enjoyable?

Between the fantastic writing and the amazing narration, this book was definitely one of my favorite audiobooks.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the mystery behind the man who was stalking Kallie when she had no idea he was. I loved how Wen Ross performed him. So creepy!

Which character – as performed by Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross – was your favorite?

I loved Jake and Kallie. Their chemistry was undeniable no matter how much they tried to deny it.

Any additional comments?

I loved this book and I am dying to listen to more in the series. The Mountain Masters are hot!! Cherise Sinclair has quickly become one of my favorite authors and I cannot wait to see what else she has in store.

This audible book was so worth the wait!!

I have read this amazing book by Ms Sinclair a number of times but bringing it to audible made the book even better. I LOVED the performance from such talented individuals (sorry I have been up all night and I am to lazy to get your names. I couldn't stop listening) anyway the only criticism I have is I am a slow reader so it seemed a little rushed but other than that it was AMAZING!! I do hope Ms Sinclair continues to use you for the rest of the books. Thanks for such a wonderful performance. You made my day.

Fighting a past, a serial killer, and for a future

I’ve read this story before but this was the first time I listened to the book. Een Ross and Kai Kennicott do not disappoint 😃. When you pick a story by Cherise Sinclair you know you’ll get a fast paced story with some suspense, wonderful realistic characters, and lots of kinky sexy times and Master of the Abyss is no exception. Jack and Kallie are both scarred by their past and get to deal with a serial killer. Is their bond strong enough to survive it all - are they strong enough?

narrators ruined the book

I really can't stand these two narrators, their voices are annoying, their acting skills are terrible, it's like listening to high schoolers put on their first play. I would have preferred to read the hard copy myself.

male narrator

I have read reviews about Wen Ross and what a great narrator how is...I disagree. He reads these dominant male roles and his voice does not sound masculine at all. Just not a good match for the books that I've read with him narrating. The voice doesn't fit the character, which makes it difficult for me to read.

Emotional

Made me cry! This is the best one so fare because it was exiting, made me laugh and cry. Kalli seems to be a tough one but she struggles with the feeling of not being wanted and loved. Jake has his own struggles after a ex-girlfriend killed herself. The story is good and the characters described thoroughly so I felt I knew them so good. And at the end I cried with compassion for Kalli and her feelings. I feel like I can't say anything more because then I'll reveal to much. Read for your self and I can guarantee you a good book. Narrators: Read with feelings and clear pronunciation 5 stars overall

The story was good

The Story was good but the narrators were not good especially the male. It just didn’t do it for me. It took away a lot of the passion and emphasis I think the story could have given. Bring back the male that read the Master of the Mountain because he was pretty good.

Jake and Kallie!

I love a tastefully written, hot and passionate book with a story that has some grit to it. Cherise Sinclair is the master of this kind of writing. Always a strong, alpha dom, a matching heroine, but what I find the most intriguing is her stories and how they get to where they are. This one lets us get to know Jake Hunt. We first met him in Logan's story, and now we get to hear his. He is a man, not interested in a relationship after a woman he uncollared committed suicide. Kallie is a a wilderness guide with the Masterson family, trying to learn her place in life. Now in the eye of Jake, her longtime crush, things heat up. We learn a lot about Jake, his past and how it effected then, now and how Kallie learns to help him through. With her own demons, this story has a little of everything, including the steamy erotica Sinclair is known for. Narrated by Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross, you will love this story. Their chemistry flows through the story as we hear Kallie and Jake's relationship grow. I love their performances and look forward to the next in the series.

Such a great storyline

Great characters. I’m totally in love with these mountain men. Fantastic balance of sex, action and humour. Very well written by Cherise and amazing performances from Kai and Wen.
