Publisher's Summary
The Black Prince has launched a devastating raid deep into France, laying waste to everything in his path. In response, the French have mustered an army that outnumbers the English forces 10 to 1 and are determined to drive their hated foe from the land after years of bloody conquest.
Sir Thomas Blackstone, the British archer knighted on the field of Crecy, has used the intervening years to forge his own war band and has hacked out his own fiefdom in central France. He knows the English are outnumbered, outmaneuvered, and exhausted....
But that will not stop him from fighting his way to one of history's greatest military victories.

Great story about a brutal and heroic time
Following on from the first book in the series this novel continues the pace and intrigue surrounding Sir Thomas. The author does not hold back in describing the brutality of the day so some may find that difficult but for others the ongoing Anglo French struggle is a riveting journey. Well written and well read this is a terrific saga.

As good as Cornwell
This series covers some of the same ground as Bernard Cornwell’s Archer series but where Cornwell has famous battles as his end point Gillman covers a broader spectrum. But if you like stories set in this period this is a lot of fun. Good plot, well written and well performed.

All in one
One for all and all for one is an apt concept for the European continent, the sentiments of which are felt in this narrative. However, this book also has in all in one from other perspectives too. Action, Emotion, Heroics, Suspense... the near misses and close calls lend something more to this realistic work of fiction. Hurrah for the team of author and narrator.

Turned predictable and formulaic.
So....The character of the hero's wife, degenerated from intelligent and strong, into a repetitive series of stupid acts that cost the lives of several around her, her rape, humiliation, violence against her children and husband...the list goes on. Not comprehensibly so, but like a bad formula. Then she apologizes and goes on IMMEDIATELY, to do the next stupid thing. The Hero remains invincible and formulaic in his heroism, and the "bad-guy" might as well be named Snidely whiplash. Not one can be so consistently and flamboyantly bad. Even Hitler could be kind to children and dogs once in a while, and Genghis Khan showed acts of kindness and mercy. Not Gilles DeMarcy. Not only is he bad, he gives long, overblown speeches about how bad he is. I don't think I can go any further in this series. Just the thought of the return of Christiana makes my stomach ache. Please, someone tell me she either dies of the plague or somehow ceases to be a moron.

Well Performed
I do love this series of books, the battles and dialogue are so good. There is a lot of value in this book and the author doesn't seem to just harp on to fill pages. Only 4 stars because he killed off a good character, I iked that one. Now on to the next in the series.

Honour, Dishonour. Loyalty, and Betrayal.
Another gripping book in the Master of war series, has sent me scampering off to by the 3rd book in the series. Yet again, David Gilman takes us into a brilliantly crafted world of brutality, love, honour, dishonour and betrayal. Thomas Blackstone is a legend, of that there is no doubt. Not only does he command the respect of men with his sword and fists, but, in his own simple and straight to the point way of talking, he also earns the respect of men as we.. There are some wonderfully put together fight scenes, intertwined with a very deep and caring side of Sir Thomas, not only for his family and men, but for villagers who are in desperate need of food and coin. Once again, Daniel Philpott delivers a very solid narration, and it will be interesting to hear how Colin Mace does for the remainder of the series. Thank you David Gilman for another true master peace.
