Publisher's Summary

Jennifer A. Nielsen, author of the New York Times and USA Todaybestselling Ascendance Trilogy, has woven an electrifying tale of greed and power, magic and destiny, and one boy's courage at the heart of it all. When Nic, a slave in the mines outside of Rome, is forced to enter a sealed cavern containing the lost treasures of Julius Caesar, he finds much more than gold and gemstones: He discovers an ancient bulla, an amulet that belonged to the great Caesar and is filled with a magic once reserved for the Gods - magic some Romans would kill for.

Now, with the deadly power of the bulla pulsing through his veins, Nic is determined to become free. But instead, he finds himself at the center of a ruthless conspiracy to overthrow the emperor and spark the Praetor War, a battle to destroy Rome from within. Traitors and spies lurk at every turn, each more desperate than the next to use Nic's newfound powers for their own dark purposes. In a quest to stop the rebellion, save Rome, and secure his own freedom, Nic must harness the magic within himself and defeat the empire's most powerful and savage leaders.

Great middle grade novel for boys and girls alike

The audio performance was pleasing to listen to. It wasn't over acted, or set to cheesy music or read in a boring voice. I really appreciated the reading.
The book/story itself was great. Entertaining, interesting and fresh. Nielsen did a great job setting the time and place and I loved it.

Not my favorite

It was an okay story, narration was good. It just wasn't for me. It ended on a but of a cliff hanger. I hate that personally.

Does YA just mean bad writing?

Or does it mean that the book has an immature MC who does a lot of internal hand-wringing over blatantly obvious, moral decisions? Or is it because the author chooses to tell the story in the first person so they just can't resist making the MC's inner monologue sound like the diary of a twelve-year-old with a low IQ, and zero social skills?

If so then we need to make sure that these books get clearly labeled as YA so our intelligence doesn't have to be insulted nor our credits wasted.

Just because a book is written so that young adults can understand them does not mean that they have to be inane and poorly written...

- 2 stars because McLeod did his best to put lipstick on this bacon wagon.
