MAREN is a sci-fi story set after an alien "reorganization" of Earth, where most humans are kept in massive industrial facilities—CAFOs, a pointed parallel to factory farming—while a small number live in idyllic "pasture-raised" villages. The narrator is Sera, who grows up in one of those villages and is recruited into the administrative system.
The aliens don't conquer through violence. They conquer through logistics. And when they study us closely, they discover we had already done most of the work for them.
And Pell—she's Sera's childhood best friend: compact, observant, unflappable. She asks the questions nobody else will ask and delivers hard truths without cruelty.
MAREN is Plato's Cave rewritten as a factory farming allegory. Sera is the prisoner who escapes and sees the sun—except in this case, the sun is a dark truth.
