About this listen

Jordan B. Peterson's Maps of Meaning is now available for the first time as an audio download!

Why have people from different cultures and eras formulated myths and stories with similar structures? What does this similarity tell us about the mind, morality, and structure of the world itself? From the author of 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos comes a provocative hypothesis that explores the connection between what modern neuropsychology tells us about the brain and what rituals, myths, and religious stories have long narrated. A cutting-edge work that brings together neuropsychology, cognitive science, and Freudian and Jungian approaches to mythology and narrative, Maps of Meaning presents a rich theory that makes the wisdom and meaning of myth accessible to the critical modern mind.

Pretty grueling to get through in places, but it delivers a lot of value. A bit repetitive, but that seems to be the norm with academic books.

That's a tough book.

This book is incredibly wise and profound. I don't know how old he was when he wrote this book but for sure he has a huge intellect and has gifted the world something which is sure to become a classic of psychology and those wanting a broad view of what it means to be an individual and social animal in this dominance hierarchy. let's all do our best to flourish, be authentic to yourself and don't stop your heroes journey to be the best possible YOU! thank you Jordan for suitably intellectual answer to many questions I had about life and how to deal with the chaos of life which abounds.

Peterson presents a strong 30-hour analysis of mythological narratives and their connection to philosophy, psychology, and history. There are two things to be aware of:

1. It is a LONG book, and some parts do drag on longer than needed.

2. Some background knowledge of philosophy and psychoanalysis, especially the ideas of Carl Jung, will make it far easier to understand (otherwise some ideas may seem a bit bizarre).

Strong (if long) analysis - some pre-reading recommended

Inspiring, challenging, engaging and revelatory.

I'm certainly not saying I understood it all, and some concepts were so complex that after three run-throughs I'm still not sure I've grasped them, but this book offered an eye-opening insight into who I am and who we are.

Mind-blowingly meaningful

This is epic! Rigorous, comprehensive and extremely well thought out. For anyone else this would be their lifework, but Jordan keeps going.

I'm not sure such a work was possible before. Jordan draws from knowledge, beliefs and manuscripts from all over the world and all through history. That he's been able to synthesise all into this one mighty work is extraordinary!

What meaning means... the Bible of Belief.

Its not worthwhile to relate anything from the text but I'll say that I'm staggered anyone is talking about this stuff at all, and he does it so incredibly well.

Terrifying and brilliant

Among many other ideas, the rational conclusion that because everything is subjective, nothing has meaning and everything is permissible is challenged here.

Compared to other philosophical, psychological or religious texts, this explores profoundly different terrain than elsewhere.

It may require some thinking about, rather than merely listening to, as some of the ideas are difficult, if not impossible, to describe under the constraints of natural language.

Good work, a much appreciated piece.

A different mode of thinking

Whilst I found it difficult at times, I stuck with it to the end and feel as though I'm better off having undertaken such a book. Thanks JBP for all that you have done, I'm part of the long list of people who needed to hear your words and will be forever grateful.

Depth and profundity.

Despite being over 30 hours long, it is as the title suggests, multi-layered. And can and should be read again to better understand its numerous insights.

A book you can think on

This book is essential for any human. It’s a very, very deep analysis not to be taken lightly. I will re-listen to it every decade for the rest of my life.

Life changing
