Story
The enemy is coming. The enemy is already here. For years they’ve prepared, plotted, and planned. For years they’ve waited to strike from above and below. Earth is under siege. The enemy covers the landscape. Proxima is unharmed. But that’s about to change. No armies can stop this menace, and no defenses can slow the advance. We are scattered and isolated. We are ignorant and weak. No help is coming. No help remains...or does it? Old heroes will sacrifice everything. New heroes will rise.

Publisher's Summary
The New York Times best-selling author of Outlaw Platoon makes his fiction debut with this electrifying military thriller - a gripping tale of action, suspense, and international intrigue that introduces a compelling new hero, Eric Steele.
Eric Steele is the best of the best - an Alpha - an elite clandestine operative assigned to a US intelligence unit known simply as the "Program". A superbly trained Special Forces soldier who served several tours fighting radical Islamic militants in Afghanistan, Steele now operates under the radar, using a deadly combination of espionage and brute strength to root out his enemies and neutralize them.
But when a man from Steele’s past attacks a military convoy and steals a nuclear weapon, Steele and his superiors at the White House are blindsided. Moving from Washington, DC, to the Middle East, Europe, and Africa, Steele must use his considerable skills to hunt this rogue agent, a former brother-in-arms who might have been a friend, and find the WMD before it can reach the US - and the world is forever changed.
Critic Reviews
"Fast, hard, and effortlessly authentic - both lead character Eric Steele and author Sean Parnell are the real deal." (Lee Child)
"An exciting, action-packed debut! Bristling with intrigue, deceit, power, and treason - once you pick this book up, you will NOT be able to put it down. Sean Parnell has knocked it out of the park!" (Brad Thor)

Cliché Super Soldier/Spy Thriller Novel
Meet Eric Steele! He's the man every women wants to be with and every man wants to be like. He's handsome. He's built like an Adonis and he makes James Bond look like a clumsy Mr. Bean. He's a master of languages, an eye-shooting marksman in the heat of battle, and a virtual encyclopedia of everything military, espionage, geography, computers, aviation fuel usage, well, he just knows everything! Even his beautiful jade green eyes are so intense that the Director of the CIA, seeing them on a display from a drone at 45,000 feet, thinks anyone would be afraid to fight him. Seriously, the clichéd macho manliness of this book is ridiculous and embarrassing. I'm ashamed I made it to the end. The studly names and call-signs wanted me to bang my head off a wall. I truly believe the editors had to have rewritten much of the book because there is no way a vet would have done this without changing his name. His old buddies would never let him live this down. When the main characters Steele and Demo are in the super, secret Alpha! Program and are only overseen by the President of the United States and Vice President Rock, you really need to slow down and realize this story is pretty bad, as in anything approaching real life, bad. But If you like a really unrealistic and action filled, tough-guy, story, I guess it's good.

Very impressive for first thriller novel
What a great "debut" novel! This was Sean Parnell's first fiction novel, and he slammed through the thriller door. Coming off of the New York Times bestseller Outlaw Platoon, which was an absolutely riveting non-fiction book, this thriller was reminiscent of Jack Carr's relatively recent debut thriller The Terminal List. If you liked it, you'll enjoy this novel. I know it gets said too often, but like Jack Carr, this has a Vince Flynn/Brad Thor feel to it. The action is non-stop, and this novel twists and turns all of the way until the last chapter. One thing that I thoroughly enjoyed were Parnell's similes that he used. They were funny, timely, and extremely accurate. For example, one of my favorites, "Meg's senses came to slowly, like a computer after a hard-reset." This just shows you how good of a writer Sean Parnell is. I thought this book was gripping, and I thought narrator R.C. Bray did a fantastic job. His low, gravelly voice was perfect, and I hope to hear more books narrated by him throughout the thriller genre. I highly recommend this thriller. It was a great listen, and I enjoyed it so much, I finished it in one day. Don't hesitate! Also, if you haven't checked out Parnell's non-fiction Outlaw Platoon, do yourself a favor and give that a listen too.

The beginning of the book was, for me, too confusing. It got better after the first half of the book.
I have listened to dozens of espionage and suspense novels by various authors. I think the author was trying to be too cute and too suspenseful in the beginning when I was trying to figure out who was who and what was going on. Right at the most intense moment of a scene, The author would immediately stop and move to the beginning of a completely different scene in an attempt to heighten the suspense but all it did, in my opinion, was to confuse the listener. I think the author was trying to be too cute and too suspenseful at the expense of the clarity of the narrative. After the first third of the book and a lot of backtracking, I was able to figure out who were the good guys and the bad guys.

Great plot + action + best narrator = WINNER
It has been a while since I listened to an RC Bray narrated audio book. With MAN OF WAR he reminds me once again what a fabulous narrator he is. With his firs novel Sean Parnell brings together a great plot with almost constant intense action for a 5 star winner.
