Publisher's Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

From the Sunday Times best-selling author of Daisy Jones & The Six.

A lifetime holding it together.

One party will bring it crashing down.

Malibu: August, 1983. It's the day of Nina Riva's annual end-of-summer party and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer and their adored baby sister, Kit. Together, the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over—especially as the offspring of the legendary singer, Mick Riva.

The only person not looking forward to the party of the year is Nina herself, who never wanted to be the centre of attention and who has also just been very publicly abandoned by her pro-tennis player husband. Oh, and maybe Hud—because it is long past time to confess something to the brother from whom he's been inseparable since birth.

Jay, on the other hand, is counting the minutes until nightfall, when the girl he can't stop thinking about promised she'll be there.

And Kit has a couple secrets of her own—including a guest she invited without consulting anyone.

By midnight the party will be completely out of control. By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames. But before that first spark in the early hours before dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play and the loves and secrets that shaped this family's generations will all come bubbling to the surface.

Malibu Rising is a story about one unforgettable night in the life of a family: the night they each have to choose what they will keep from the people who made them...and what they will leave behind.

Taylor Jenkins Reid has such a knack for creating characters you just want to read about it.

If you liked Daisy Jones then this will not disappoint! Set in Malibu, I loved the beach setting and the relationship between the Riva siblings.

Enjoyable but nothing spectacular

I enjoyed the story but was left a bit confused why this has had a lot of rave reviews.
The family secrets didn’t really eventuate into much. I think this was because you knew everyone’s secrets from the beginning, so when everything is revealed at the party, which is what the whole story is building up to, it fell quite flat.

I didn’t enjoy the male voices the narrator put on. It made the story feel cheesy. I wish she’d just read them in her own voice.

Overall, it was an easy and enjoyable read but dont think it’s worth the hype.

Addictive Read

Another 'masterpiece' from Taylor Jenkins Reid. Is there no end to this authors imagination and writing talents? And who better to bring it all alive than Julia Whelan. What a voice she has! Easy to visualise the movie with these diverse characters and scene setting. A great story of love and fame, of 'rags to riches' that culminates in opulence and luxury at the most sort after VIP party of the year. Brilliant, rich detail of this famous postcode had me there at the shorelines of Malibu, wishing I could surf. Heart warming characters, and a few to loathe, I was submerged to the very end. I couldn't stop listening, and as usual with Taylor, didn't want it to end! Loved it!

Another epic Taylor Jenkins Reid novel

She knows how to throw a party and how to write a book. I loved this novel as much as I’ve loved the books that came before it. The clever subtlety of characters across all of her novels makes this book feel like an expansion of her already cleverly created universe.

Not the best TJR book, average read

I bought this book thinking it'll be good as it was written by TJR but was very quickly disappointed. I kept waiting for the climax but it never came. I didn't care a whole lot for the side characters and they were really annoying, like, all I want to know is what happened, not the little details that didn't matter in the end anyway. The storyline is so far fetched that is not relatable and I think TJR was trying too hard to make it dramatic, but I don't buy it. If it wasn't for the author I would've stopped reading this book way before the halfway point

Not for me

Can’t say a story about a load of over privileged people with money to burn is really my thing. It certainly doesn’t inspire me to care about them as characters.

At least the central character had some values but the fact that no one really gets ‘punished’ for their selfishness while innocent people are left to suffer the consequences means this isn’t a book I’ll be recommending.

life is too short to waste it reading this book

The book was well narrated; however, the story was vacuous at best, a waste of time.

Good but way too many characters

Loved this book up to the ‘party’ but got increasingly bored by irrelevant characters introduced into the ‘party’ sections. The Riva’s were enough

Over hyped author

Its an ok vook, but this author and her books are over hyped; and i don’t get it. Theres too many characters in the story, so its hard to get invested in them.
I’m not sure if i would recommend this audiobook or this author.

Too many characters

Story was engaging until the party when about 30 different characters were introduced which seemed unnecessary

T.J.R has got me in a strong chokehold!

I couldn’t get enough of this book. The story of the Riva family was painted beautifully, I loved the main characters almost instantly. I absolutely love how her books have cross over characters, it’s like she’s making her own little universe and I am here for it 100%!

Can’t wait to read Carrie Soto is back!

Awesome novel

I am gradually working my way through the various books by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This is another powerful story, with strong characters. I love novels set in the recent past, especially the 1980s, so that was a real bonus. Wonderful narration.

amazing read

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. I love how descriptive TJR is in her writing, especially with this book. It is amazing how each character is easy to see in my minds eye and you can see each scene play out as though your sat their experiencing everything first hand.
