Publisher's Summary

From best-selling author of Making Friends with Anxiety and One Moment, One Morning comes a clear, comforting audiobook to guide you as your body changes through menopause.

Authored and voiced by Sarah Rayner with warmth and humor, this new edition of Making Friends with the Menopause has been updated to reflect the latest National Institute for Health and Care guidelines on diagnosis and management of menopause. Together with Dr. Patrick Fitzgerald, she explores why stopping menstruating causes such profound chemical changes in the body, leading us to react in a myriad of ways physically and mentally.

There is practical advice on hot flushes and night sweats, anxiety and mood swings, muscular aches and loss of libido, early-onset menopause, hysterectomy, and more, plus a simple explanation of each stage of the menopause so you'll know what to expect in the years before, during, and after. You’ll find details of the treatment options available and their pros and cons, together with insights from women keen to share their wisdom on a subject many still find hard to talk about.

Whether you’re worried about feeling invisible, weight gain, or loss of fertility, or you simply want to take care of yourself well, Making Friends with the Menopause will give you a greater understanding so you can enjoy your body and sexuality as you age.

Fantastic

I was struggling “thought I was going mad” , didn’t feel like myself, like my body was not me, the horrendous anxiety and the clear hormonal imbalance I was dealing with made me want to scream whilst no voice was coming out. At 42 years of age “I’m too young”; even my young (locum) GP has question marks, but luckily for me I started researching and found this book... it saved me from going even further down the rabbit hole & made me feel I’m not alone or that just because I’m fairly young to hit the peri-menopause , it probably is because I feel my body is telling me it’s moving towards the change. Sorry for the long review, but without this book, I wouldn’t have been able to come out of my very down spiral mood. Read/Listen to it, keep it, give it away to spread the word, buy it as a precious, valuable gift...woman deserve to know its not all about “hot flushes” ! It hit me like a brick... I’m just thankful I found it fairly early on. Thank you Sarah!

Must listen for all those dealing with menopause

This book touches on so many menopause related topics in a simple way. Its clearly read by Sarah and I found listening to it felt like a friend talking with me. It helped demystify the menopause and reassured me that I am not the only person experiencing it - even though no-one talks about it in real-life! I also enjoy being a member of the related Facebook group, where women can share their experiences and support each other.

Great to listen to - packed with great advice

I've read the paperback but wanted to listen to the updated version with the new NICE guidelines.I'm so glad I did. What a brilliant refresher. It's informative yet personal - the different contributors voices add variety and depth and Sarah speaks clearly and beautifully - it's like listening to your best friend. For the uninitiated it's a brilliant guide to the period before, during, and after menopause. In my middle years, this time of change looms and yet, like so many women, I knew virtually nothing about the 'change' aside from that which I'd gleaned from snide jokes about hot flushes. Until now. Listening to this fabulous audio book, I feel fully prepared, both physically and mentally. And I thoroughly enjoyed the listen - something I did not expect given my terror. I am a complete baby, despite my years. Sarah Rayner's style is chatty, personal. She'd been through this herself and she really does know what she's talking about. Plus, the book has clearly been thoroughly researched and it's jam-packed with useful tips, and anecdotes. Every woman experiences menopause and this wonderful guide is well overdue. Thank you, Ms Rayner. Oh, there's also a Facebook page - a place to talk and share experiences and ideas.

Fantastic, informative listening for every woman

This audiobook was interesting, accurate and has a fountain of useful information. Highly recommended for any woman who considers she might be pre or peri-menopausal as it covers the early stages right through to post-menopause. It was well narrated by the author and her counter-part, as well as those who were narrating for the interviewees :) A must read/listen for any woman, no matter their age.

Informative

Informative and interesting. There are some really good snippets in here that just back up what I’ve googled! You never know if that stuff is true or far fetched. So to hear that yes it is but did you also know...then you get more facts and information. Well read & with extras from other women & a Dr, you know you’re not alone and its ok.

Lots of help and empathy

This is a very helpful guide and one I wish I'd had 11 years ago. Yes I'm that far down the line and thought I'd read up everything there was to read but there were still a lot of helpful tips in this book. I thought the little personal accounts from other women were incredibly helpful. It made me feel like I was sitting with a group of like-minded friends having a cup of tea rather than listening to a self-help guide. A really useful book that I have no doubt I will be dipping into on numerous occasions in the future. Now if only I can get my husband to listen rather than saying, "yes, it is a bit warm in here", which makes me want to kill him!

You are not alone

So I’m sat listening to this in hospital in the middle of a tropical heatwave (hot flush to me and you) thinking 42 is far too young for the menopause but judging by some of the other symptoms I have I think I’m going through the perimenopause so far (what fun lol). This audio book is very informative and interesting and makes you feel less alone and less stupid and yes it is ok to need a kip in the afternoon.

Very helpful advice for all women, warmly and eloquently read

I’m peri menopausal and have a bunch of symptoms I didn’t know were due to hormone changes, and now I understand my body and mind a whole lot better, thanks to this audio book by Sarah Rayner. Narrated by the author with clarity and wit, it explains the three different stages of the menopause and treatments that one can try. There is also advice from a GP (who has a lovely voice) and other women talking about their experiences and what worked (or didn’t work) for them. All in all it provides a really good overview without being too partisan or preachy about any of the recommendations so each reader can make up their own mind about which route to take. I’d felt nobody understood and now I’ve listened to Making Friends with the Menopause I feel less alone and more optimistic as I know it won’t last forever. Highly recommended if you’re in the run up to the menopause or are right in the middle of this difficult time.

Very disappointed

This was a very, very basic overview for me personally. Having worked in public health and wellbeing all my life, there were no new hints or tips. This book would suit an “ostrich “ as Sarah put it, who hasn’t done much in the way of self discovery. I felt it was very patronising at times and old information. I didn’t agree with lots of the books guidance, and found it , prudish but trying to be forward thinking. Not the help I thought it would be 😔x

Fantastic, clear, inspiring and an utter relief

This is the best book on the menopause I have read or listened to. It’s brevity does not mean it is not full of really great helpful and reassuring information; it means it is accessible and easy to process. I feel like the menopause has been demystified which was precisely what I was looking for. Sarah reads the book herself - it has been well-researched and covers a range of topics. Her reading is clear and warm, and I am so relieved to have found this book! Thank you!
