Maigrets brenzligster Fall: Der Kommissar wird mit einem Serienmörder verwechselt! Maigret möchte Erholungsurlaub in der Dordogne machen. Aber bereits die Anreise läuft schief: Ein Mitreisender springt plötzlich aus dem fahrenden Zug. Maigret folgt ihm - und wird niedergeschossen. Im Krankenhaus von Bergerac wird er zunächst für einen Serienmörder gehalten. Zwar lässt sich der Verdacht zerstreuen, doch für den Kommissar ist vorerst Bettruhe angesagt. Der holt sich daher kurzerhand Unterstützung von Madame Maigret bei den Ermittlungen.
