Da wendet sich ein amerikanischer Millionärssohn an ihn - sein Vater werde bedroht, er brauche Maigrets Hilfe. Der muss nicht lange überlegen und besteigt mit dem jungen Mann ein Schiff nach New York. Kaum von Bord, verschwindet sein Auftraggeber spurlos.
