Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) stammte aus einer Musikerfamilie und studierte am Mailänder Konservatorium. Obwohl seine ersten Opern zunächst keine großen Erfolge waren, wurden sie später weltbekannt. Puccini entwickelte die italienische Operntradition weiter und brachte auch exotische Themen auf die Bühne, wie in seiner bewegenden Oper "Madame Butterfly", die 1904 in der Mailänder Scala uraufgeführt wurde.
