Publisher's Summary

Bryony Gordon has OCD.

It's the snake in her brain that has told her ever since she was a teenager that her world is about to come crashing down: that her family might die if she doesn't repeat a phrase five times, or that she might have murdered someone and forgotten about it. It's caused alopecia, bulimia, and drug dependency. And Bryony is sick of it. Keeping silent about her illness has given it a cachet it simply does not deserve, so here she shares her story with trademark wit and dazzling honesty.

A hugely successful columnist for the Telegraph, a best-selling author, and a happily married mother of an adorable daughter, Bryony has managed to laugh and live well while simultaneously grappling with her illness. Now it's time for her to speak out. Writing with her characteristic warmth and dark humour, Bryony explores her relationship with her OCD and depression as only she can.

Mad Girl is a shocking, funny, unpredictable, heart-wrenching, raw and jaw-droppingly truthful celebration of life with mental illness.

Critic Reviews

"What a book! I read this like a thriller, I was so gripped. I feel comforted by this book; by the honesty, insight, compassion, and the beautiful writing. Mad Girl is going to be seismic." (Marian Keyes)
"I loved it. A brilliant fast and funny and frank look at something that absolutely needs to be talked about in this way." (Matt Haig)
"Funny, warm and fearlessly honest. This book is a must for anyone who's ever lost their mind but was too polite to mention it." (Sali Hughes)
"A powerful and intimate look at the way our minds can torment us, this honest and rather beautiful book will bring comfort to those who fear they are alone in their madness." (Cathy Rentzenbrink)

Great story for OCD sufferers

I haven't met anyone else that has severe OCD like I do yet. After listening to numerous books about this disorder it's nice to listen to someone's honest and real experiences. Excited that she's coming out with another book!

Really good real story of mental health

I am about to become a Therapist. Stories like that really help future people from health sector to grasp other side of the illness. Not only labelling people but getting to know individual story behind the person. Worth listening to.
But sometimes Bryony shouted too loud, especially if you have your headphones on :-)

I completely understand!

Great expose of the standard mental health issues so many "normal" people live with. The crippling pain that we're not supposed to talk about, talked about loud and clear. We're all mad in our own ways.

A great, honest book.

Amazingly written and refreshingly honest. Hilarious and heart wrenching in equal measure.

I love this book! The author's account of OCD is one of the most honest I've read, and as someone who suffers from the disorder, so refreshing! This will resonate deeply with a lot of people, will probably make you laugh hysterically and cry and equal measure. Bryony is smart, witty and funny and a great advocate of speaking about mental health issues, because they affect so many of us!

A fun book to listen to

Bryony Gordon demonstrates well the concept that we must stop judging ourselves. Throughout the book she talks about things that surely she would have been ashamed of. If as Bryony says, many people find themselves suffering as she does, then many people (if they enjoy her wonderfully dramatic English accent) will nod along to her experiences. I bought this audio version because I felt I would more easily finish it than the paper version. Which I think is definitely true. I really got into this telling of her story, but after 5 hours, I felt I had to be in the humour (one of wanting to finish it + feeling a bit lonely or isolated myself) to get back to listening again. Given I listened to this book I imagine I may not have had so much patience for it if I were reading it.

Mad Narrator

I'm really interested in the subject matter, the author having experienced OCD, so buoyed on by the many positive reviews, I decided to purchase this book. Oh dear, I only managed to sit through three chapters of Gordon breathlessly galloping and shouting her way through the book.

It's a shame because she's clearly an intelligent and informed woman, but I was starting to get a headache. Thank goodness for the Audible great listen guarantee!

Read at 100 miles an hour

Authors should not read their own work. I couldn't engage with the story as it was read too fast to start with . This was a shame because the content was worthy.
