In einem früheren Vorwort des "Hyperion" sagt Hölderlin: "Die exzentrische Bahn, die der Mensch, im Allgemeinen und Einzelnen, von einem Punkte (der mehr oder weniger reinen Einfalt) zum anderen (der mehr oder weniger reinen Bildung) durchläuft, scheint sich, nach ihren wesentlichen Richtungen, immer gleich zu sein. Die Auflösung der Dissonanzen in einem gewissen Charakter ist weder für das bloße Nachdenken, noch für die leere Lust."
Im Wechsel und in den Bezügen von Dichtung und Prosa wird ein Charakter des Denkens deutlich, der - persönlicher als der "grobianische Weltgeist" des Freundes Hegel und wärmer als das egologische Ich des Fichte - eine Verwandtschaft mit dem gläubigen Existentialismus Kierkegaards vorwegnimmt. Hier liegt gar etwas immer noch Zukünftiges, etwas Ungebrauchtes.
