About this listen

In Loving Country, co-authors Bruce Pascoe and Vicky Shukurolgou show travellers how to see the country as herself, to know her whole and old story and to find the way to fall in love with her, our home.

Listeners are encouraged to discover sacred Australia by reconsidering the accepted history and hearing diverse stories of her Indigenous people. The intention of this audiobook is to foster communication and understanding between all peoples and country, to encourage environmental and social change.

Co-authors Bruce Pascoe and Vicky Shukuroglou hope that all communities will be heard when they tell their stories and that these stories and the country from which they have grown will be honoured.

From the ingenious fish traps at Brewarrina and the rivers that feed the Great Barrier Reef, to the love stories of Wiluna and the whale story of Margaret River, there is so much to celebrate here. For those who want to enrich their understanding of our world, and for travellers looking for more than a whistle-stop tour of Australia, this audiobook offers some keys to unlock and reveal the heart of this loving country.

Loved this

I really enjoyed this, I've listened to Deep Time Dreaming and Dark Emu recently and wanted to get a perspective that filtered out our strongly white anglo-saxon bias. Although some overlap I really enjoyed the themes shared with Dark Emu. Also I find both Vicki and Bruce write very poetic prose which made it rich and for me delightful.
I particularly enjoyed the early descriptions of travel up the east coast and interpreting the cultural landscape. Also I got a great sense of the commonality of certain stories common across Australia such as the whale stories that seemed to reflect deep time.

I learnt so much from this audiobook about Indigenous Australia. The engaging story telling style and love for the land that comes through from the authors/narrators, made it easy listening. I’d love to visit some of these remaining places of special significance.

There is a whale story on a rock near me, on Berry Island Sydney harbour. I was intrigued to hear more about these whale stories and how they are retold all around the country.

What a rich culture has been displaced and overlooked! Thanks to the authors for piecing together what’s left of these stories to tell.

I enjoyed the audiobook so much that I bought a hard copy so that I could see the pictures and diagrams. I’d recommend both.

Exceeded expectations

This book should be in every Australian household and read and reread, and shared through generations. There is hope.
Much has changed about me from reading this.
I will reread.

What an awesome way to share stories about the First Nations people of Australia, and their willingness to share thousands of years of culture and knowledge with us.

Their appreciation and care for the land - their integrity and spiritual connection to living in harmony with nature just gives me goosebumps.

I look forward travelling to some of these places, getting up close & personal appreciating what is around us. Happy NAIDOC week Bruce & Vicky this is a fantastic book.

A great read - educational, inspiring & a little sad

Really enjoyed this book reading and have learned so much about the history of this country and its islands. It is well worth the time to listen, especially to the many stories, interconnections and learning pronunciation of Aboriginal place names and nations.

Incredibly interesting yet deeply disturbing as to the arrogance and cruelty of our forefathers. The book inspires hope but it’s questionable as to whether we have the capacity or courage to change.

Fascinating and thought provoking

Thankyou Bruce and Vicky. You are both and honour and a privilege to listen to. You have differing, complimentary styles of storytelling. Kind and generous both. Plus, I could listen to Bruce all day. Such a wonderful reading voice. I loved it and will share it with friends and visit the places you speak about in the conscious way you suggest.

Sooooo good
