Story
Gundagai, 1852. The powerful Murrumbidgee River surges through town leaving death and destruction in its wake. It is a stark reminder that while the river can give life, it can just as easily take it away. Wagadhaany is one of the lucky ones. She survives. But is her life now better than the fate she escaped? Forced to move away from her miyagan, she walks through each day with no trace of dance in her step, her broken heart forever calling her back home to Gundagai.

Story
Once an artist and teacher, Jen now spends her time watching the birds around her house and tending her lush, subtropical garden near the small town where she grew up. The only person she sees regularly is Henry, who comes after school for drawing lessons. When a girl in Henry's class goes missing, Jen is pulled back into the depths of her own past. When she was Henry's age, she lost her father and her best friend Michael - both within a week.

Story
Some incentives are obvious, but many of the most powerful incentives are accidental, and invisible even to those who designed them. Some are tame - and some are most definitely not. Whether it’s bounties for criminals or Instagrammable meals, training your dog or saving the planet, incentives regularly backfire, go missing, mutate and evolve. Without oversight, their unintended consequences can have very global effects. Here, economist Jason Murphy uncovers the huge incentive systems we take for granted and turns them inside out.

Some people are exceptionally manipulative. They can convince anyone about anything and lure them with their charm. They enjoy controlling others and will do anything to get what they want. Sound familiar? The bad news is that you can’t really escape them. But here comes the good news: you can beat them at their own game.

It was winter. Lauren Keenan was separated from her husband, lonely and miserable. Then came the night of 27 Rejections of Doom: she asked 27 people to hang out one Friday night and every single person said no. Lauren realised her life wasn’t working for her and that she needed to change it. It was time to try something new. Fifty-two new things, in fact. She made a resolution: she’d try 52 new things in 52 weeks.

Story
The atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed more than 100,000 instantly, mostly women, children, and the elderly. Many hundreds of thousands more succumbed to their horrific injuries later, or slowly perished of radiation-related sickness. Yet the bombs were "our least abhorrent choice", American leaders claimed at the time - and still today most people believe they ended the Pacific War and saved millions of American and Japanese lives. Ham challenges this view, arguing that the bombings, when Japan was on its knees, were the culmination of a strategic Allied air war on enemy civilians that began in Germany.

We all know there are major, overlapping, global crises ahead of humanity: climate change, mass migration, new warfare, big tech, further pandemics, authoritarian capitalism. Rather than be daunted, this book charts a way that we can respond. With expertise from his work at the highest levels of international politics, education, activism and business, Tom Fletcher offers a practical manifesto that can help us transform the way we learn, live and work together. Amongst its key survival skills, this book offers ideas on how we renew education, restore society and reimagine the future.

A great read - educational, inspiring & a little sad
What an awesome way to share stories about the First Nations people of Australia, and their willingness to share thousands of years of culture and knowledge with us.
Their appreciation and care for the land - their integrity and spiritual connection to living in harmony with nature just gives me goosebumps.
I look forward travelling to some of these places, getting up close & personal appreciating what is around us. Happy NAIDOC week Bruce & Vicky this is a fantastic book.

Get a First Nations Perspective on Travelling Oz
I really enjoyed this, I've listened to Deep Time Dreaming and Dark Emu recently and wanted to get a perspective that filtered out our strongly white anglo-saxon bias. Although some overlap I really enjoyed the themes shared with Dark Emu. Also I find both Vicki and Bruce write very poetic prose which made it rich and for me delightful.
I particularly enjoyed the early descriptions of travel up the east coast and interpreting the cultural landscape. Also I got a great sense of the commonality of certain stories common across Australia such as the whale stories that seemed to reflect deep time.
