About this listen

A pasture of dead trees, a hostile takeover of the Santa barn by a family of raccoons, and shipments that have mysteriously gone missing—Lovelight Farms is not the magical winter wonderland of Stella Bloom’s dreams.

In an effort to save the Christmas tree farm she’s loved since she was a kid, she enters a contest with instafamous influencer Evelyn St. James. With the added publicity and the $100,000 cash prize, she might just be able to save the farm from its financial woes. There’s just one problem. To make the farm seem like a romantic destination for the holidays, she lied on the application and said she owns Lovelight Farms with her boyfriend. Only there is no boyfriend.

Enter her best friend Luka Peters. He just came home for some hot chocolate, and somehow got a farm and a serious girlfriend in the process.

Lovelight Farms is a romantic comedy featuring a handsome freckled data analyst, a messy, optimistic Christmas-tree-farm owner, and a small town with the best hazelnut lattes on the east coast.

This sweet and steamy romance is a holiday happily ever after and the first book in a series of interconnected standalones following the three Lovelight owners.

Critic Reviews

"Narrator Pippa Jayne delights listeners in this festive friends-to-lovers romantic comedy.... Jayne's light, melodic tone complements Stella's charismatic and passionate personality. Plus, her ability to capture Luka's masculine voice adds to the slowly building but irresistible chemistry between him and Stella. Listeners will cheer as Stella and Luka go from fake to forever in this holiday romance." (AudioFile)

*SPOILERS*

I was enjoying this book quite a bit, despite it being fairly slow paced. The story involves two best friends (Estelle and Luca) whereby, Estelle had been in love with Luca for almost 9 years.

After all the fake dating, getting physical and growing intimacy, Luca confesses his love to Estelle and says that he has been wanting more for some time now. Now, when you have a character who already loves another character, who subsequently expresses their love for said character, you’d think they would reciprocate and be relieved that their feelings are reciprocated, right? No. Estelle thinks it’s too hard to be honest with him about her feelings, despite him already having done the hard part and basically lets him believe that she has rejected him. But also, confusingly enough, she also claims to not believe him, even though he does a solid job of explaining his real feelings to her. Then it takes her having conversations with three people and watching a compilation of videos where Luca and Estelle are being couple-y for her to finally believe that he’s in love with her. AND THEN! When she sees him again after all of this, she doesn’t just tell him how she feels straight away to save him from further heartbreak, but continues to make excuses in her internal dialogue and allows him to make this long speech and apologies for his behaviour (his behaviour was to just get some space from her for the day after being seemingly rejected when expressing his love for her). It all felt quite lazy in tension and conflict building. Almost as if the author felt they didn’t have enough tension and/or conflict throughout the book and decided to add in a very unjustified version of it at the end.

I think that the overall experience of the book was unfortunately tarnished for me as a result of the poor devised and unjustified conflict between the two characters at the end.

Well established characters, but conflict at the end was poorly executed and ruined the whole experience. *SPOILERS*

This book was masterfully written. B.K. Borison has an unreal way of describing physical contact with strong undercurrents of longing and need. The best friends to pretend dating trope has never been experienced quite like in this book.

I wanted to like this I really did. The premise was cute and Luca and Lala together worked so well. What didn’t work was the constant over thinking of Lala and her determination to make herself miserable. Plus the performance voice made her sound as if she was about 45 years old yet Luca about 35. It was bizarre.

Love story that makes you want to hit your head
