A deliciously observed social comedy

This book was so much fun! I loved the characters (apparently only slightly exaggerated portraits of real people in the author's life) and their aristocratic eccentricities. Nancy Mitford is a wonderful wordsmith, whose witty and elegant prose brings to life the interwar existence of England's upper classes.

Patricia Hodge's narration is utterly perfect for this material; her accent is suitably aristocratic and her style is very expressive but with a brisk, no-nonsense quality that brings out the book's satirical humour. The characters' voices are well defined and the story rattles along at a good pace.

This is one audiobook I will definitely listen to (and laugh at) again.

Worth listening to.

The first half had me in stitches, utterly wonderful. The second half had a change of pace that altogether detracted from the greatness of this novel.

Witty tale of England between the wars

What did you like most about Love in a Cold Climate?

I have enjoyed this book since I was a teenager and read it every year.

What other book might you compare Love in a Cold Climate to, and why?

Nancy Mitford is the queen of this type of story because it is a thinly veiled description of her life. No one really compares to her.

What does Patricia Hodge bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Patricia Hodge is brilliant, I only wish she could be persuaded to read the other Mitford books.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Some of the characters are wicked and self absorbed, the characters are a lot of fun.

Brilliantly read!

What a combination - Nancy Mitford and Patricia Hodge! The latter reads this book superbly, capturing the essence of the various characters perfectly. This is the only version 'one' need listen to - the UNABRIDGED one and read by a truly great actress.

Cold Climate - Hot Stuff

If you could sum up Love in a Cold Climate in three words, what would they be?

Brilliant, stylish, ironic

What other book might you compare Love in a Cold Climate to, and why?

Brideshead Revisited is also an account of aristocratic life in the 1930s. But whereas Waugh was besotted and romantic about it, Nancy Mitford knew it from inside and is mercilesslly ironic without ever being malicious. She can see the end of the lifestyle she describes so brillantly without any of Waugh's tragic regrets.

It's also nice to come a across a pre 1960 novel that accepts gays.

Have you listened to any of Patricia Hodge’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No, but she is perfect for this book. She also does not use an irritating convention of using a gruff voice for male characters.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did laugh but found it deeply satisfying.

Brilliant book perfectly narrated

Nancy Mitford captures the era and the characters to perfection. She draws you into the world of the faded aristocracy with a perceptive but kind wit. This is the sort of book you don't want to end. Patricia Hodge is an excellent narrator who brings each character to life effortlessly.

Lovely period novel

This is a delightful read, at times cruelly funny, much darker than the satire of Wodehouse but with the same sense that the write loves the characters they mock. A great reading by Patricia Hodge that draws out the humour and gives life to the characters.

BEST BOOK I HAVE READ IN A LONG LONG TIME

What did you like most about Love in a Cold Climate?

The unexpected humour of the upper classes sometimes without knowing they are either naturally funny or just odd.

What did you like best about this story?

The unexpected kept happening, but it also through light on what the upper classes really think of the "plebs", sometimes rather rather nasty but I have a feeling they probably still do only now they just think it without coming out with it for fear of not being pc!

Which character – as performed by Patricia Hodge – was your favourite?

Definately Fanny

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh

Any additional comments?

From the title I expected maybe a sloppy love story but was I surprised, yes. I shall be reading more from Nancy Mitford
