"الحب في المنفى" رواية خيالية بأحداث واقعية تدور في بداية الثمانينات قبل وبعد الاحتلال الإسرائيلي لبيروت، تُحكى بلسان صحفي مصري ناصري في الخمسين من عمره، صُدم في ما آلت إليه بلاده بعد رحيل عبد الناصر نفسه، وانتقال البلاد من زعيم إلى قائد... مر بعدة اضطرابات في حياته الزوجية انتهت إلى الطلاق من زوجته منار، سافر بعدها إلى سويسرا حيث عمل مراسلا لصحيفة لم تعد تنشر له أي شيء، لأنه لا يزال مواليا لعبد الناصر!

تستمر أحداث الرواية فيتعرف إلى المرشدة السياحية النمساوية بريجيت ويحبها. ثم يظهر في حياته أمير خليجي ثري يحاول إقناعه بتحرير جريدة ينوي إنشائها، إلا أنّه يكتشف أن هناك نوايا مشبوهة في الأمر!!

تعدُّ هذه الرواية للروائي بهاء طاهر إحدى العلامات المميزة في مسيرته الأدبية، فقد صنفت ضمن قائمة أفضل مئة رواية عربية، وقال عنها الناقد الدكتور شكري عياد إنها: (نموذج جديد للرواية الواقعية)، فهي تمثل مرحلة الغربة التي عاشها بهاء طاهر بعد فصله من عمله في الإذاعة المصرية في منتصف السبعينيات من القرن الماضي... إذ اتجه إلى مدينة جنيف بسويسرا؛ ولهذا يمكننا القول، إن مشاعر طاهر في الغربة تجسدت في هذه الرواية.
